Debian install closed source package method

In the system operation, closed source software and open source software are relative, there are always people who take these two advantages and disadvantages, sometimes need to install the nasal package in the system, the following small I will introduce you to the method of installing closed source packages in Debian.

Debian is a distribution with 48,000 packages. These packages are divided into three categories: main, contrib and non-free, mainly in accordance with the license requirements, refer to the Debian Open Source Software Guide (DFSG).

main repositories including compliance with DFSG of open source software. Contrib also includes open source software that conforms to DFSG, but relies on closed source software to compile or execute. Non-free includes DFSG-compliant, redistributable, closed source software. The main repository is considered part of the Debian project, but contrib and non-free are not. The latter two are only maintained and provided for the convenience of the user.

If you want to be able to install closed source packages on Debian, you need to add contrib and non-free repositories. To do so, open /etc/apt/sources.list with a text editor and add “contrib non-free”“ to each source.

Below is an example of /etc/apt/sources.list for Debian Wheezy.

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/wheezy main contrib non-free

deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/Wheezy main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

deb-src http://security.debian.org/Wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

# wheezy-updates, formerly called ‘volatile’

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/wheezy-updates main after contrib non-free

deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

End Review source, running The following command downloads the file index of the contrib and non-free repositories.

$ sudo apt-get update

If you use aptitude, run the following command.

$ sudo aptitude update

Now you search and install any closed source packages on Debian.

The above method is to install closed-source Debian packages introduced, prior to installation, you have to modify the source, and then download the file index contrib and non-free repositories, but you can install closed Source package.
