RAID5 Disk Array Installation and Troubleshooting

This article will give you a brief introduction to RAID5 disk arrays and how we should fix RAID5 disk array failures after a disk array failure. Interested users, stay tuned!

How to implement RAID5 disk array
ATA RAID controller There are two main types of RAID controllers on the market:

1, IDE RAID controller integrated on the motherboard, now many high-end The motherboard has an integrated ATA RAID controller.

2, a I英 I875P motherboard supporting parallel interface RAID5 disk array mode, and a separate ATA RAID control card HighPoint's Rocket RAID 1820A.

At least three or more hard disks are required. It is recommended that the hard disk have the same capacity and type. If two hard disks with inconsistent capacity and speed are used to form RAID, according to the rules defined by RAID, the system will model the capacity with the smallest capacity and establish the RAID system with the speed of the fastest hard disk. This is the common RAID mode. A principle of compliance. If you are using a control card that supports Serial ATA channel, but no STAT hard disk, you can configure the adapter

The structure of RAID5 disk array
The following is the implementation of HighPoint Rocket RAID 454. With RAID5 disk arrays, the RocketRAID 454 supports eight RAID channels and supports multiple RAID levels. Includes RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and JBOD. With the HPT374 chip, the RocketRAID 454 has an advanced cache algorithm, PCI-X technology architecture, operating frequency up to 133MHz, and RAID management software.

HighPoint RocketRAID 454 control card package includes RocketRAID 454 disk array card, 4 IDE hard drive cables, short bezel, driver, disk array control software and user manuals, etc. Under the protection, it is displayed in the box. Plug the RocketRAID 454 card into the PIC slot on the motherboard and connect the RAID card to the same IDE hard drive with the IDE hard drive cable.

RAID5 disk array is the installation process
1, press "Ctrl + H" during the boot process to enter, HighPoint RocketRAID 454 BIOS control screen.

2, the system will display the model and size of all hard drives connected to the RAID card. Select the option in the upper toolbar, which has RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, RAID5, and JBOD options.

3. Select RAID5 mode. After entering the RAID5 setting screen, the system will pop up another window. We select the “Select Devices” item and select the three hard disks to be installed.

4, then select "start creation" to remind you that "all the data in the disk you selected will disappear, do you want to continue this work?" If you want to continue, press Under Y, you must first exit the backup information and press N. Press the "Y" system to start creating a RAID5 disk array.

5. After finding a system hard disk as the boot disk and booting into the operating system, the system will discover new hardware and install the driver.

6. After the driver is installed, the RAID controller appears in the computer management, indicating that the RAID has been successfully installed. After the new partition is created, the basic installation is completed and the RAID5 disk array is created.

Repair after failure of the disk array
The disk array will also fail. What should we do in the event of a failure? This article will give you a brief introduction to the failure of RAID5 disk arrays.

1. If a single hard disk fails, try hot plugging, that is, unplug it and plug it in again; if it cannot be solved, enter the RAID configuration interface and perform the ForceOnLine operation on the hard disk;

2. If it can't be solved, try to replace the other hard disk slot (must not change the disk order);

3, if it can't be solved, try to insert the hard disk and insert it, then use ReBuild operation; if it can't be formatted, Basically, the physical error of the hard disk is serious. Rebuild the data after trying to replace the hard disk.

The RAID5 disk array allows hot swapping of the hard disk. When replacing the damaged hard disk, first unplug the hard disk carrier (the hard disk is fixed on the bracket), remove the damaged hard disk from the bracket, and then put it in good condition. The hard drive is mounted on the bay and inserted into the array. If everything is ok, then the RAID5 disk array will automatically enter the data reconstruction state immediately. This process will take several to 20 hours.
