As Microsoft executives introduced at the Build Developers Conference in September this year, the Windows Store will allow users to purchase and download Metro-type apps directly from the platform. Desktop (non-Metro type) apps can't be downloaded from the Windows Store, but developers can market their apps there and provide links to apps.

At the Windows Store preview show on Tuesday, Microsoft executives also introduced the latest data about Windows to the participants. They said that there are currently 1.25 billion Windows PCs worldwide; since September, the Windows 8 Developer Preview has been downloaded 3 million copies; so far, Windows 7 has sold 500 million units.

In the beginning, Microsoft will split 30% of the revenue from developers selling apps. As long as the revenue of an app in sales and in-app purchases reaches $25,000, the share will fall to 20%.
