4KB hard disk sector Vista compatible patch official download

Microsoft sometimes releases a number of regular update patches with monthly security patch upgrades to solve a variety of non-security issues. Some of these patches will be placed in the official website download center and automatically pushed through Windows Update, and some are only Hotfix hot fixes, which need to be requested by users.

This month we got the SVG vector graphics rendering correction patch KB2563227 through Windows Update, and introduced the blue screen patch KB2528641, DVD burning disk reading patch KB2566584, USB device performance improvement patch KB2581464 Now let's take a look at the 4KB sector technology "Advanced Format" (Advanced Format) compatibility patch.

Advanced format is a new type of hard disk sector technology introduced by hard disk manufacturers since the end of 2009. The physical sector capacity of hard disks has been expanded from 512 Bytes to 4 KB, so that it can be larger. Formatting capacity and significantly improving the reliability of the hard drive. In order to maintain wider compatibility, the 4KB sector hard disk still retains a 512Byte logical addressing interface, called "512-byte emulation disks" or "512e".

Of course, this requires both the operating system and the application software to natively support 4KB sector capacity write operations, otherwise additional work must be done, which in turn affects performance and reliability. Windows Vista/7 and the corresponding server system Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 can natively support 4KB sectors in advanced format, but there are still some compatibility issues with the previous generation system Windows Vista/Server 2008, so Microsoft released a hot fix. KB2553708.

According to the Knowledge Base article, the patch fixes three issues: the first involves the storage driver model Storport (corresponding to the file Storport.sys); the second involves file system related The task utility Fsutil (corresponding to the file Fsutil.exe) can output a new Bytes Per Physical Sector, which is "512" on the traditional 512-byte hard disk, and the new 4KB sector hard disk is & ldquo; 4096 & rdquo;; The third is about the physical sector capacity of various storage devices reported.
