Confirm: Win10 Edge browser abandons ActiveX and Silverlight plugins

Microsoft has announced that its latest Edge browser for Win10 systems no longer uses many of the features on Internet Explorer, including the fact that ActiveX-based plugins are no longer supported. Today, Microsoft confirmed that it has abandoned ActiveX and no longer supports its own Silverlight web media playback technology.

Microsoft wrote in the blog:

“ Microsoft Edge browser does not support ActiveX, including removing Silverlight support. Previously, the blog also mentioned that it will turn into the latest HTML5 extended media solution that is reliable and secure. Microsoft will continue to support Silverlight and other applications that use Silverlight. In IE11, Silverlight will continue to be supported, and Silverlight will still be available in Windows 10. At the same time, we encourage companies using Silverlight to transition to DASH/MSE/CENC/EME designs, as well as single DRM operational coding with CENC enabled. This is the best interoperable solution across browsers, platforms, content and devices. ”

Silverlight was first introduced in 2007 as a web player alternative to the Adobe Flash player. The most popular is the Netflix desktop video streaming service that uses this technology. The last major update was Silverlight 5 in 2011, and Microsoft has no plans to release a new version. Most sites have abandoned Silverlight, and Netflix is also moving its web player to HTML5.
