Vista start menu search performance optimization guide

  
Everyone should have noticed that a new project appeared in the Windows Vista start menu - "Start Search" box. As part of the greatly improved search capabilities of Windows Vista, we are able to quickly perform an instant search through the Start Search box here. However, in order to make our search more accurate and comprehensive, it is really necessary to adjust the "start search" settings.
Let's take a look at the implementation process:
1. Right click on the taskbar and select "Properties", as shown in Figure 1.

2, "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window will pop up. Click on the "Start Menu" tab, then click on "Custom", as shown in Figure 2.

3. In the "Customize Start Menu" window, scroll the mouse until you can see the items related to the search, as shown in Figure 3.

4, below, each option is specified:
* Search - add or remove the "search" link in the start menu;
* search program - Search for installed programs that appear in the Start menu;
* Search Favorites and History - If checked, searches for the current user's favorites and browsing history. This feature is available for Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2;
* Search Communication - If checked, it will search the current user's email information and contact list. This feature is available for Windows Mail, Outlook 2003 & 2007, and Mozilla Thuderbird. Disabling this feature speeds up the search;
* Search for files - There are three options here:
# Do not search for files - Disabling file search can greatly improve search speed. If you use the Start Search box as an alternative to clicking the "All Programs" menu, it is recommended that you check this box;
# Search this user's file - Search only the files in the current user's "Documents" folder. This is a compromise option;
# Search the entire index - Search for files in the entire index. The larger the index, the slower the search speed.
5, Finally, according to the above solution to adjust the check state of each option.
