New version of Windows Live will not run on XP

Microsoft is ready to begin public testing of the next generation of video and photo editing software, but Microsoft confirmed this week that the product will not be able to execute on Windows XP.

The new version will be part of the update for Windows Live in the Microsoft Online Services "Wave 4". In updating Windoww Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Photo Gallery and other downloadable Windows Live Essentials programs, Microsoft chose to adopt the improved graphics engine and compatibility in Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, this also represents the sacrifice of the old operating system compatibility.

Microsoft Vice President Chris Jones said in an interview this week that "we just made the right decision." ” Jones said the existing version will continue to support XP users, and now services such as Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger can continue to be used on XP.

The focus of the revision of Movie Maker and Photo Gallery is to make it easier to share content with friends.

In the coming months, Microsoft will begin to publicly test the next generation of online Windows Live services. Microsoft is not ready to talk about the details, but Jones said the company's focus will be on Hotmail and Messenger, and will also remove some of the less popular services.

In addition to updating Hotmail and Messenger, the next version of Windows Live will include the browser version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, which is commonly known as Office Web Apps.

Jones said the details of these products will be announced in the coming weeks.

Jones said that one of the key directions of Windows Live is to focus on using other products to connect to other services, rather than trying to push Microsoft's own options. People don't need another photo sharing service or social network. What they need is a software that is easier to share and interact with.

“ How do we make it easier for people to share on Flickr or Facebook or somewhere else? This is the part that makes Windows better for us. ” Jones said.
