The following small series will introduce you how to use vino-server to configure desktop sharing on the Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon desktop.

Problem: I tried to enable desktop sharing on the Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon desktop via the Vino VNC server (vino-server). However, I found that the vino preference tool used to configure vino-server (eg, sharing options, security, notification on/off) is no longer there. At the same time, I can't find the sharing menu on my Cinnamon desktop. How can I configure desktop sharing via vino-server on the latest Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon desktop? The latest Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon desktop comes with a pre-installed vino-server for VNC desktop sharing, but it reports that the desktop sharing menu is missing.

An optional way to configure vino-server and enable desktop sharing is to use the graphical interface of dconf-editor.

First install dconf-editor:

$ sudo apt-get install dconf-editor

Start dconf-editor.

$ dconf-editor

In the left panel of dconf-editor, navigate to “org-"gnome-"desktop-"remote-access”, then you will see various A variety of desktop sharing options.

The most important thing is, click on the & ldquo; enabled & rdquo; to activate remote access to the desktop. In addition, you can customize other options.

For example, you can enable VNC password verification by modifying the following fields:

authentication-methods: set to [‘vnc’]vnc-password: Change your favorite password to Base64 Encoded string.

In this example, we select “password” as the VNC password, its Base64 encoded string is “cGFzc3dvcmQ=”.

You can also choose to enable other options:

notify-on-connect: Displays desktop notifications when vino-server receives a connection request. Prompt-enabled: The remote user does not allow access to the desktop through the VNC tool unless the VNC requests permission from the owner of the desktop.

Troubleshooting

When I started vino-server, I encountered the following error.

** (vino-server:4280): WARNING **: The desktop sharing service is not enabled, so it should not be run.

To enable the desktop sharing service, use the above Said dconf-editor. You can also choose to run the following command:

# gsettings set org.gnome.Vino enabled true

The above steps make it easy to enable Linux Mint Cinnamon to enable desktop sharing.

The above is the Linux Mint17 Cinnamon configuration method of desktop sharing via vino-server. If you also encounter the loss of the desktop sharing menu, try the method steps described above.
