Use GHOST Backup Win XP Note

GHOST is a very good software. With some assistant software written by some friends, you can realize the function of the complete backup system, which provides convenience when restoring the system, but, do you know? Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. If it is used improperly, it may bring irreparable damage. Let's talk about the need to pay attention to the use of GHOST software backup 2000 (XP) system partition, improper, please correct me.

1, partition format

The first thing to note is the partition format, 2000 system (XP) can use two partition formats, one is the traditional FAT partition (FAT16, FAT32) The other is the NTFS partition format unique to NT, 2000, and XP. In 2000, it is NTFS5. The NTFS partition format is more secure and efficient and is therefore commonly used. The lower version of GHOST software does not correctly identify NTFS format partitions. Therefore, you should select a higher version of GHOST software before operation to ensure that the NTFS partition format is correctly recognized.

2, hard disk properties

The second thing to note is the properties of the hard disk, the usual hard disk is a basic disk in 2000 (XP), there are partitions on the basic disk (can be divided into Primary and extended partitions. Basic disks are the disk attributes we usually use, but there are a lot of special features that can't be implemented on basic disks, such as mirrored volumes, fault-tolerant volumes, and so on. The realization of these functions is based on the conversion of the disk into a dynamic disk. The dynamic disk cannot exist in the DOS operating system or be recognized by the DOS system. There is no concept of partitioning on the dynamic disk. Instead, the volume can be divided into simple volumes. Cross-regional volumes, etc., volumes are not like partitions. The same partition can only exist on one physical disk, while the same volume can span up to 32 physical disks. This is a very useful feature on the server. And the volume can also provide a variety of fault tolerance (RAID0 or RAID5).

GHOST software generally only recognizes basic disks and does not recognize dynamic disks. If your disk properties are dynamic disks, you may not be able to use GHOST software for backups. It should be noted that some SCSI disks (HOTSWAP) are recognized as dynamic disks once plugged in, and some logical disks that have been hardware arrays are also recognized as dynamic disks. It is important to note that from a basic disk to a dynamic disk, the original partition will be converted to a simple volume, but to convert from a dynamic disk to a basic disk, all the volumes need to be deleted before they can be converted.

3, backup and distribution

Using GHOST software can completely retain the disk information (by the way), so in the 98 era, we often use it to install a batch of computers at the same time (the same Or different), but in the 2000 (XP) era, you have to pay attention, the 2000 (XP) installation process will record important hardware information, so your backup can only be restored on the original machine. If you change important hardware or change the machine, it may not be able to boot normally after the backup is restored. This is determined by the hardware characteristics of 2000. Is there a way? Have. The 2000 (XP) genuine special distribution tool, called SYSPREP, can be used to remove hardware information from the system before using GHOST. Make the core suitable for all hardware. When such a backup is started for the first time, the system will automatically re-detect the hardware and register the database. This process is similar to installation 2000, except that the process is fast and does not require an installation CD. To be careful of. After re-encapsulation processing using SYSPREP, the system will automatically shut down. Please do not re-open the system, otherwise the hardware information will be recorded again.
