If you receive Windows update error 80240016 while trying to install an update, the system is in the process of performing another installation. Please wait for the installation to finish before attempting to install the update. If you are not sure which program or device is performing an installation or update, check the notification area on your computer for progress information, or check your desktop or taskbar to see if the installation wizard is running. If the problem persists, try using Windows Update Troubleshooter.

If it doesn't work, try the following steps.
Steps to Stop or Restart System Programs
1. Close all open Windows Update or Microsoft Update windows.
2. Click the “Start” button and type “command prompt”.
3. In the results list, right-click “command prompt”, then click “run as administrator”. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4. In the "command prompt" window, type the following command. Press Enter after each command:
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

5. To close the “command prompt” window, type Exit and press Enter.
6. Run Windows Update again.
Technical explanation: Error 80240016 Shows that Windows Update cannot access the User Token. User tokens contain basic credentials that allow Windows updates to make changes to your computer on your behalf without having to log in every time. This error can occur if you have run your computer for a long time and have not restarted and the token has expired. This error can also occur if <;automatic updates" is running in the background and Windows updates are running in the foreground.
Start and stop “automatic updates" The service will reset the service and get the token again.
