Win8.1 "Sliding Shutdown" requires Connected Standby support

According to a small tip in BAV0, in fact, Slidetoshutdown.exe still exists in Windows 8.1 RTM released last week. Unfortunately, we haven't seen its actual demo yet.

What does this mean? Microsoft apparently hides some details about the feature in the Windows help file (press the F1 key).

According to the Windows Help file, if you buy a Windows 8.1 preview or a Windows 8.1 preview PC, and the device supports Connect Standby, then "Slide to Shutdown" would be a faster Shutdown method.

This involves "press and hold the power button for about 4 seconds" until the option to "slide to shut down" appears on the screen. Then, you can simply drag down the lock screen (activity dragging with the mouse) to perform a shutdown operation —— similar to the operation on Windows Phone.

What do you need to do to enable "slide shutdown"? The steps are as follows:

1 Run CMD; 2 Execute the powercfg /availablesleepstates command to determine if your machine supports Connect Standby.

However, when we execute this command on our own computer, we get an error message: "The system firmware does not support this standby state."

So, what exactly is Connect Standby? Microsoft's explanation is:

"Connect Standby brings the power model on the smartphone to the PC, giving users instant access like a mobile phone On/off experience. In addition, as on mobile phones, when a suitable network is available, Connected Standby will be system fresh, up-to-date & —— this requires low power consumption to meet specific Windows certification requirements. PC platform ".

Microsoft has not mentioned when this cool feature will be released, or the company has removed the project and just forgot to remove it in the Windows help file. Perhaps more, we will soon see this feature on companion devices running Windows 8.1.

If you want to slap the drums, the Slidetoshutdown.exe file is located in the System32 folder.
