What is the practical use of the Win10 virtual desktop feature?

win10 virtual desktop can make it easier for users to manage desktop windows when running multiple programs. However, many friends have not used win10 virtual desktop before, so what is the practical use for us to use computers? How do you use this feature? Let us discuss together.

1. Features and Limitations of Two Desktops

We used to organize files or tasks on the Windows desktop by placing different shortcuts or file icons on a single desktop. Although there is only one desktop for traditional Windows, we can organize different categories of files or tasks by dividing them into different icon areas. If there are more files or items, they can be organized by folders, so that they can be in a single The number of icons on the desktop that exceeds the limit of the screen; in addition, by fixing the desktop folder on the taskbar, you can also extend the desktop to the taskbar menu to expand the wider desktop space (Figure 1). But this extension is limited, and adding too many elements to a desktop will always be a bit messy.

Tip:

In the system before Windows 10, the multi-level folder on the desktop is locked by the way of creating a new toolbar on the taskbar. Extend the desktop space to make up for the lack of multiple desktops. For details, please refer to the 6th issue of 2014, “Building a Multi-Level Menu Better Than the Start Menu”.

Virtual desktops organize information by storing different windows on the desktop (Figure 2). The introduction of Windows 10 multi-desktops frees the limitations of the number of icons placed directly on the desktop, allowing us to open new desktop organization icons and files according to categories. However, virtual multi-desktops also have their limitations. Multiple desktops cannot be replaced with desktop backgrounds, and desktop icons and their arrangement are also common.

2. Practical application and skills of multi-desktop

Different program grouping operations

For example, use IE, Word and Notepad to work. We hope to copy useful content from IE. After the notepad saves the layout format, copy the unformatted text into Word and re-type it. At this point, you only need to open a new virtual desktop and then open the three programs related to this task on the desktop to avoid confusion with other programs that have already been opened.

The general method of opening a new desktop and creating a workgroup is to click the “task view” button on the taskbar, click “New Desktop& quoquo; in the lower right corner of the desktop view, and then create a new one. Open the desired application and document in the desktop (Figure 3).

Re-layout messy desktop windows

If you have a lot of programs or documents open on a desktop, but these programs or documents belong to different task groups, you will find that you are working More confusing. These tasks should have been divided into groups, such as a group to process web pages and text content, a group to handle QQ and WeChat chat content, and another group for work drawing. At this point, you can re-layout the desktop window by creating a new desktop and moving the window to the new desktop by class.

Reassign the desktop by first clicking the task view button to create several new desktops, then switch to the first desktop, and then press the class on each window in the virtual desktop, using the right-click menu command “ To → desktop n”, move the window involved in a group of tasks to the nth desktop (Figure 4).

Working with virtual keys to manipulate virtual desktops

If you want to create a new desktop, the traditional method needs to click the taskbar desktop view button. However, when this button is hidden or lost, how does the work of creating a new desktop work? In fact, in any position, we can use the key combination Win+Ctrl+D to create a new desktop at any time, and this method is very fast.

If you want to switch from the currently working desktop to another virtual desktop, use the Win+Ctrl+Left/Right arrow to quickly switch to the previous or next virtual desktop.

If you want to close the current desktop, press Win+Ctrl+F4 at the same time, the desktop can be closed immediately. Maybe you are worried about the window that is already open on the desktop? Don't worry, these open windows will automatically move to the previous virtual desktop without losing any information. This is also a quick way to merge desktops, much faster than using the right-click to move windows to another desktop.

If you want to move quickly between windows that are open on the current virtual desktop, you can use the Alt+Tab key combination. After pressing it, you can see the view of the large thumbnail. Each time you press it, the program box will Jump to the adjacent window (Figure 5).

When the Win+Tab key combination can be used to open a multi-desktop task view, the effect is the same as clicking directly on the task view on the taskbar. The advantage of the shortcut is that when the task view button on the taskbar is hidden or lost, you can cancel by pressing Win+Tab.

The window between multiple desktops supports mouse drag and drop operations, and different windows of the same application can also be moved to different desktops (Figure 6).

If you are still using Windows 10 or lower version of the operating system, you may not have to go with multiple desktops. Install the simple multi-desktop tool Desktops, or you can virtualize 4 desktops in Windows. If you want to build more flexible and free multi-desktop, use Dexpot! Not only does it create multiple desktops, but every desktop you create can have its own wallpapers, screensavers, desktop icons, and even resolutions that are different from other desktops. From this point of view, Dexpot has to overwrite the virtual desktop of Windows 10.
