Win10 Edge browser update: support more online video formats such as VP9

The Edge browser is arguably one of the biggest new features that Microsoft offers to users in Windows 10, and its features are stronger than any previous generation of Internet Explorer.

Now, Microsoft engineers have brought new content to the Edge browser.

Microsoft announced today that Edge has added WebM, VP9 and Opus encoding formats, making it easier for users to experience multimedia content online.

This support is effective after upgrading from the Edge browser engine EdgeHTML to 14.14291. Websites that use Media Source Extensions (MSE) to adapt to streaming content can meet the requirements. Windows Web applications that use the same Edge API can also support these three new formats. WebM and VP9 encoding can provide better 4K decoding support and reduce the consumption of hardware resources. Opus also provides good bandwidth adaptation in voice/RTC applications and is capable of simultaneous HD media playback.

The new format support is now available in the Win10 First Anniversary Update Preview, and Windows Insider users can now experience it. The improved stable version will be officially launched after the official release of Win10's first anniversary update.
