Win10 confirms that native support for 8K resolution screens requires 27 inches or more.

8K has become a must for many display device manufacturers, but Microsoft has set its sights farther and hopes to support ultra-high 8K Ultra HD through Windows 10 natively. (7680 X 4320) level resolution, driving higher resolution TV, display and content development. Wei Feng.com March 25th news, not long ago at the WinHEC conference, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 devices will support a wider range of resolution, while also providing a better DPI scaling.

27-inch screens can adapt to 8K resolutions

According to the slides demonstrated by Microsoft, Windows 10 natively supports 4K and 8K resolutions. 4K resolution requires PC or 2 in 1 devices to 8 inches or larger, 8K resolution requires at least 27 inches, and small size devices such as tablets and smartphones require 6 inches or more for 4K resolution Size, this category does not support 8K devices.

Microsoft mentioned that the Windows 10 operating system natively provides the 4K video codec HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, the current standard of the United Nations International Telecommunications Union. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not mention another different 4K video codec VP9 in its slides, perhaps because the standard was customized by Google and mainstream TV and chip makers.

Microsoft also shared Windows 10's new digital rights management platform, PlayReady 3.0, which protects the copyright of video and streaming content, claiming that the standard will be based on hardware technology that protects the content of tablets, smartphones and PCs. .

8K It will take many years to become a mainstream of real life

In the January CES show, in addition to the 4K TV set of Dabo, there are also a number of large screen 8K resolutions. TV sets debut, but most of them are conceptual products, priceless or price-sensitive. The mobile field is currently moving from Full HD to 2K, and 4K is still far away from us. However, when it comes to 8K content, it is true that major TV content providers have followed suit to varying degrees. Among them, Japan's NHK TV station has even tested 8K radio and television for the Olympic Games held in Tokyo in 2020.

As mentioned earlier, the actual resolution of 8K is 7680× 4320 pixels. Currently, Windows PC cannot support the input/output port problem, but in the next few years, not only 8K will appear. Display and hardware products, as well as accessories for the 8K resolution interface will be born.

The native support of 8K Windows 10 ensures that Microsoft's system is still a powerful gaming and multimedia platform, and also encourages the development of hardware vendors, Nvidia and AMD's next-generation graphics cards, confirmed to support 4K And 8K resolution.

At the same time, the SuperMHL connectivity features proposed by TV manufacturers and the VESA Video Electronics Standards Association just completed the embedded Embedded DisplayPort 1.4a (eDP 1.4a) protocol standard last month. It will provide strong support for the development of 8K, where the eDP 1.4a standard transmission bandwidth can reach 8.1Gbps, and the possibility of native 8K support for laptops or mobile devices is greatly increased.

VESA has previously stated that it is expected that by 2016, we will be able to see products using the new DisplayPort standard. But don't expect too much 8K laptops, 8K smart TVs may go ahead, and then slowly spread to smaller devices.
