Since the EdgeHTML 14.14291 release, the Edge browser will support the open source WebM container format, VP9 video and Opus audio encoding. Websites that use Media Source Extensions (MSE) can use these encodings to adaptively stream content. Windows web applications (based on the same Edge APIs) can also accommodate VP9 and Opus using WebM streaming. This change will be applied first to the upcoming Windows 10 annual update.
