Troubleshooting Modem for Windows XP

☆ Modem Diagnostics Indicates that External Serial Modem Does Not Receive Commands

Cause: If the modem diagnosis indicates that the modem did not receive the command, the modem cable may be faulty.

Solution: Try a new cable to connect to the modem.

☆ The modem cable is good, but the modem still cannot receive the command

Cause: The modem is not installed correctly.

Solution: Check your modem's documentation to make sure you have the modem installed correctly.

☆ The modem has been installed correctly, but the diagnosis indicates that it is not responding correctly

Cause: An incorrect model and structure was specified during Windows installation, or an outdated installation was used (.inf ) File to install the modem.

Solution: Check the modem's documentation for the correct model and structure (or compatible model and structure) and reinstall the modem. You can check with the manufacturer to see if there are other up-to-date installation files available to install the modem.

☆ The modem is working but still cannot be connected according to the modem diagnosis

Cause: The modem is not connected properly to the telephone line or there is a problem with the telephone line.

Solution: Check the connection to the phone line. If the modem is connected properly, call a professional to check your phone line.

☆ You cannot connect to another computer or online service provider, or there is a problem with the connection

Cause: The data connection parameters (see hardware settings) of the two modems are not the same. The data connection parameters of both modems must be the same in order for their connection to succeed.

Solution: Check the hardware settings of both computers. Typical settings are 8-bit data bits, no parity, and one stop bit.

To connect to an online service provider, refer to the documentation provided by your service provider for the correct settings. They are usually eight data bits, no parity, and one stop bit. Bulletin boards and most service providers use these settings. If these don't work, try seven data bits, even parity, and one stop bit. Some online service providers use these settings. Other settings are very rare.

☆ The system cannot detect it automatically when you insert a PCMCIA modem card

Cause: The card's built-in COM port is not configured.

Solution: Configure the card's built-in COM port using Add Hardware in Control Panel. You can then install the PCMCIA modem using the Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel (see Installing a Modem).

☆ RS-232 serial devices are not working properly or not working at all

Cause: Some RS-232 serial devices now support faster than standard serials installed on most current computers. 115.2 Kbps supported by the port. (For example, some serial devices support 230 Kbps.)

Solution: If the Port Speed in the connection preferences is faster than 115.2 Kbps, try reducing the speed to 115.2 Kbps. You can keep the "maximum port speed" in the modem properties at a higher setting. If your computer's serial port supports speeds above 115.2 Kbps, set Port Speed to a slower value for serial port speed and device speed.

☆ Connection report in "Network Connection", port is in use or no remote access is configured

Reason: There are several possible reasons:

When starting Windows The Plug and Play modem is not connected or not turned on, so it is not detected correctly.

The port is used by another program, such as a fax or telephone dialer.

The connection may not have been updated to reflect changes to the communication device, such as a new serial port or modem.

Solution: Use one of the following workarounds:

If the modem is disconnected or turned off, reconnect or turn on the modem, then restart Windows or use Device Manager to scan New hardware.

If the communication port is being used by another connection, hang up the connection or modify the connection to use a different port.

If you have changed your hardware (such as a new serial port or modem), be sure to reconfigure the connection.
