GHOST Usage (Illustration)

Even if you have the most advanced computer, using the traditional method, Windows installation speed is still a headache! Is there any easy way to reinstall the system? Ghost is one of the choices. Ghost is the most commonly used and most powerful tool for everyone in backup/maintenance systems.

Norton Ghost files are relatively small, as long as a master file Ghost.exe (Ghost 2002 only More than 600 KB can work, a boot disk can be installed. Since it is a pure DOS program, it is recommended to make a boot disk and put Norton Ghost on a floppy disk. Next, let's take a step-by-step look at how to make an image file and restore the system:

Make a primary partition image

After running Norton Ghost, the first thing you see is the main menu. The meaning is:

Local: Local hard disk operation

LPT: Hard disk operation connected by parallel port

NetBiOS: Operation between network hard disks

Option: Set (usually use the default value)

Take the stand-alone example as an example, select the “Local” menu, here also includes the following submenu:

Disk: Hard Disk Operation Options

Partition: Partition Operation Options

Check: Check function (generally ignored)

Well, after understanding the meaning of the menu items, we can start the “reload tour”.

Select " Partition" see the following command:

TO Partition: partition to partition copy

TO Image: partition content backup into image

From Image: image restore to partition

For the average user, the most used ones are "TO Image" (partitioned content backed up as an image file) or "From Image" (restored from image file to partition) in "TO Partition".

First boot with a clean boot disk Run the Ghost.exe file in pure DOS mode. After displaying the main screen Ghost, select "Local → Partition → To Image", the screen shows the hard disk selection screen, select the source partition the hard disk where "1" (note that Example for double disk).

Select the location where the image file is saved (note that you cannot select the partition C you want to back up), and then type the image file name in the "Filename" text box, such as "C_BAK" or "C_BAK". .GHO", then press the Enter key.

Figure 5: Start making partition images

Next Norton Ghost will ask Do you need to compress the image file, "No" means no compression; "Fast" means small scale compression but the backup work is faster; "High" uses a higher compression ratio but the backup speed is relatively higher. Slow. Generally choose "High", although the speed is slightly slower, the hard disk space occupied by the image file will be greatly reduced.

After all the preparations are finished, Norton Ghost will start making the name for you. As the image file of "C_BAK.GHO". According to the author's experience, the backup speed has a great relationship with the CPU frequency and content capacity. Generally speaking, 64MB memory can reach 71MB/min, and the author's C disk uses about 2GB. Left and right, it only takes about 10 minutes. In order to avoid accidental deletion of files, it is best to use this image file. The property is set to "read only".

Restore the primary partition image

Through the above work, we have backed up an image file named "C_BAK.GHO" on the D disk. If necessary, you can quickly restore the original face of the C drive by following the steps below.

Figure 9: Determining the target partition

Select the target partition C in the target hard disk to be restored. Note that the target partition must not be selected incorrectly, otherwise the consequences will be unimaginable.

Finally, Norton Ghost will ask you again if you want to perform the recovery operation, and warn you that if you do, all the information on the target partition will disappear. After clicking “Y”, the recovery operation starts at the same time as the mirroring. After the recovery is completed, Norton Ghost will recommend restarting the system and follow the prompts. So soon a clean and perfect basic system will be used. Reappear in front of you.

Note on using Norton Ghost

1. Put Norton Ghost on the boot disk;

2. Set the working mode of the hard disk correctly. Your hard drive works in Ultra ATA/33/66 mode and makes image files. The speed is relatively fast;

3, the image file should be kept as "clean", "basic" as much as possible. The more the application software is installed, the more serious the system is modified, the more error-prone it is to install new software, so Do not install too many application software before making an image file;

4. While restoring the image file, the original data on the target disk is completely overwritten, and cannot be recovered by any anti-delete method.

Second, LAN operation

LPT is to transfer backup files through the parallel port. There are two options: slave and master, which are used to connect the host and client respectively. Network basic input and output system NetBiOS is similar to LPT, and there are two options, slave and master, which are the same as LPT.
Make the *.gho file of the ghost partition in peacetime first, then install Symantec Ghost Enterprise Edition on a win98, restart
1. First make a ghost boot disk with NIC driver. Start > Programs > Symantec Ghost
