Shielding features that are not needed in WinXP

Although Windows XP has many features and ease of use that are much more powerful than previous systems, more features mean more system resources. In fact, some of the features that come with Windows XP are no better than third-party software. In order to make the system more refreshing, I have collected some ways to undo Windows XP's own functions and share it with you.

First, undo ZIP file support

Starting from Windows Me, Microsoft has built-in support for ZIP files in the system, users can The ZIP file is viewed as a folder.

WinRAR is now the most popular compression software, and you must have this software installed on your system. Forbid the Zip file function, just cancel the registration of zipfldr.dll. Click "Start → Run", enter "regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll" (without quotes, the same below) in the run input box, press Enter.

Similarly, if you don't like the system to view the CAB archive, type "regsvr32 /u cabview.dll" to cancel the registration of cabview.dll.

Second, undo video preview and burn function

Whenever a video file is selected with Explorer, XP will be in the left panel The preview is displayed, but this is often a half-day read for larger video files.

Users do not need to preview in most cases. The forbidden method is also very simple. You can undo the video preview by typing "regsvr32 /u schmedia.dll" in the run input box.

Windows Media Player has been adding the burning function since 8.0, and does not say its bugs, it can not be compared with professional software such as Nero. To disable this function, modify the registry. In the Registry Editor, expand the primary key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion], and create a new one in the right panel as "NoCDBurning" double-byte value (DWORD). The value is changed to "1" is fine.

Three, undo the memory function of the registry editor

Windows XP inherits the memory of the registry editor in Windows Me, However, this function has the opposite effect, causing inconvenience to the user. There are two steps to undo:

1. Run the Registry Editor and find the primary key in turn [ ,null,null,3],HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Applets\\Regedit], delete the "LastKey" key in the right panel;

2. Click on the Regedit branch in the left panel. Right-click, select the “Permissions” command in the pop-up shortcut menu, and set “Full Control” and “Read” in the “Administrators Permissions” window to “Reject”.

Fourth, undo the scheduled tasks

When the system is connected to other computers, it will check all the scheduled tasks on the other computer. A 30 second wait time is required for the check. We don't want to spend time on this. In the Registry Editor, expand the primary key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\RemoteComputer\\NameSpace], delete its subkeys - Windows will no longer Check the scheduled task.

V. Undoing the automatic installation of IE components

Because the system uses IE components to install automatically, sometimes using Internet Explorer browser to access certain When the web page is displayed, a dialog box for downloading and installing the IE component program will pop up. I don't really like this feature. If you have this feeling, you can undo it by following the steps in Group Policy:

1. Enter " in the "Run" dialog box. Gpedit.msc", activate the "Group Policy" management window

2. In the console tree on the left, expand "Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Internet Explorer", and then In the right panel, double-click the "Disable automatic installation of Internet Explorer components" option to open the "Disable automatic installation properties of Internet Explorer components" dialog box.

3. In the "Settings" tab, set "Disable automatic installation of Internet Explorer components" to "Enabled", click the "OK" button to make the settings take effect.

When you use IE, the system will not automatically install the IE component program. If you want to re-use the Internet Explorer component auto-install feature later, just set "Disable automatic installation of Internet Explorer components" to "Disabled".

The same setting "Disable regular check of Internet Explorer software updates" option can be customized to perform regular updates of IE.

Six, undo Windows XP auto-restart and automatically send error report

Whether sometimes when using Windows XP, some error messages pop up Windows XP automatically restarts. This is because Microsoft designed the automatic restart function, but for some users, this feature not only did not help, but lost the data saved in the future.

The "My Computer" icon on the desktop (the "My Computer" icon in the start menu is also available) right click, select "Properties" in the pop-up menu, pop up In the Properties window, switch to the "Advanced" tab, click the "Settings" button in the "Startup and Recovery" group, and uncheck the "Automatically Restart" checkbox in the pop-up window.

Similarly, in the "Advanced" tab, click the "Error Report" button, in the "Error Report" window that pops up, select the "Disable Error Reporting" method, and revoke "but notify when a serious error occurs. I will checkbox and finally click the "OK" button to return. From this system error report will not bother you again.

7. Undo group similar taskbar

Group similar taskbar function can automatically group similar taskbars when opening too many task windows Buttons, multiple windows opened by the same program after grouping will be folded into a button. Clicking this button with the left mouse button will display all the windows, and right-clicking the button will close the windows at once.

But this function will cause us to switch between multiple task windows. If you want to disable it, you can right click on the blank space of the taskbar. In the pop-up menu, select "Properties" and cancel the "Group similar taskbar button" in the "Taskbar" tab.

In fact, this feature makes it easier for users to manage windows, but the system prematurely groups the taskbars. We can customize this function by modifying the registry: in the Registry Editor. Expand the primary key [HKEY_CURRENT_Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Advanced], and create a new "TaskbarGroUPSize" double-byte key-value item (DWORD value type) in the right window, and assign the desired number of specific windows, such as settings. If there are eight, the system will only group the taskbar after the window opened on the taskbar reaches 8.

8. Undo hidden inactive icons

When there are so many icons in the system tray, Windows XP will automatically detect and hide already Icon that is inactive for a while. Don't like the system to be smart, disable it by the following method: Right-click in the blank space of the taskbar, select "Properties" in the pop-up shortcut menu, and "Hide inactive icons in the "Taskbar" tab. "Cancel. Of course, users who feel that this feature is easy to use can click the "Customize" button to set the hidden and displayed items of their own, and use this function purposefully.

Nine, Undo Desktop Cleanup Wizard

By default, the system will automatically run the Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days, the wizard will A shortcut icon that you have not used in the last 60 days and moved to the new "Unused Desktop Shortcuts" folder on your desktop.

The method of undoing is also quite simple: right click on the desktop, select "Properties" in the pop-up shortcut menu, and select "Desktop" in the "Display Properties" dialog box. Label, then click the Customize Desktop button and uncheck the Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 Days check box in the General tab.

10. Undo disk space report

When there is less disk space on one of the partitions of the hard disk, Windows XP will not stop. The prompt box that pops up the disk is not enough on the taskbar to "harass" the user. To revoke it, you need to use the registry editor, expand the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft] branch, and create a new double-byte key-value item in the right window. The value will be "1" and restart the system. It will take effect.

Of course, there are many other items that remove the built-in features of Windows XP, such as deleting redundant hidden installation components through the "sysoc.inf" file (Figure 11, file at In the C:\\WINDOWS\\inf folder, there are hidden attributes), the debugger Dr. Watson is turned off, system restore is turned off, and so on. These skills must be familiar to everyone, I will skip here. In this text file you can undo more features that are not useful to you.
