An introduction to the hard drive for the server and another indispensable part of the

server hardware - the hard drive. If the motherboard is compared to the brain and the CPU is the heart, then the hard disk is all the blood vessels that run through the body. The amount of information is huge. Each blood vessel has its own purpose. Of course, if it is a core blood vessel such as an artery or a vein. If there is a problem, the server itself will be greatly affected. Therefore, how to choose a hard disk is also very important. The precious data on the server is saved on the hard disk, and there can be no flashes. Below I will introduce the contents of the DIY server hard disk according to my own experience.

First, what are the special needs of the server hard disk?

A server-specific hard disk is a server hard disk. It is well known that the server is running in a working environment with large data volume exchange and long working hours. Therefore, the hardware requirements are very high. As the hard disk of the network data core warehouse, various user data and management are stored on it. Software, all of which require a secure and stable environment, so the reliability of the hard disk is very important. Therefore, the special requirements of the server hard disk are different from those of the ordinary PC hard disk. He needs to be able to run at high speed to meet the operating conditions of the server. The stable operation cannot be used casually. He needs to be safe enough not to frequently damage the hard disk or even damage the data. .

Second, what is the difference between a server hard disk and an ordinary hard disk?

The difference between a server hard disk and a normal hard disk is still very large, which is determined by its special needs. Mainly reflected in the following points.

(1) The server hard disk is faster:

The hard disk used by the server is fast, which can reach 10,000 rpm (rpm) or even higher, while the ordinary PC hard disk is basically 10,000 rpm or less. In addition, because the server needs to read and write frequently, the role of the hard disk cache can not be ignored. Generally, the cache of the server hard disk is 8MB or higher, which is better than the performance of the ordinary PC hard disk. In addition, the average access time, external transmission rate, internal transmission rate and other parameters are more advantageous than the ordinary PC hard disk, so his overall speed is much higher, and the data transmission throughput per second is greatly improved.

(2) The CPU usage of the server hard disk is lower:

Because the CPU workload of the server is relatively heavy, all concurrent connections and various applications are given to him, and each additional visitor is added. The workload of the CPU will increase. Therefore, during the operation of the server hard disk, the CPU can only vacate a percentage of a dozen or even a few percent to assist the hard disk. If the CPU usage of the server hard disk is high, the card player will appear during actual use. In the case of these, the performance of the server is seriously affected, so the server hard disk requires its CPU usage to be lower.

(3) The server hard disk runs more reliably:

The server needs 24*7 operation, and his hard disk must run continuously for 24 hours, although it can be used in various technical means. Or reduce the hard disk speed when the load is small, but it is impossible to stop him. Therefore, the server hard disk is under a huge workload, and the server does not allow the hard disk to have a problem.

(4) The server hard disk supports hot swap: (Figure 1)
Figure 1
As mentioned above, the server needs 24 hours * 7 days of uninterrupted operation, so when a device When the problem occurs, the server is not allowed to be shut down. Otherwise, the loss is huge. Therefore, the server hard disk is hot swappable. We can plug or unload the hard disk when the server is running. This is very different from a normal PC hard drive.

(5) The server hard disk supports RAID: (Figure 2)
Figure 2
The so-called RAID is to work through two or more than five hard drives to ensure that the data stored on the hard disk is intact. Non-destructive technology, the problem of a hard disk in the actual use of the process has occurred, after all, the workload and work pressure of the hard disk is huge, if there is a sacrifice, if you still use a hard disk like a normal PC or If two hard disks are plugged into the IDE cable separately, the hard disk damage means that the data is lost. The data on the server is precious and cannot be easily lost. Therefore, the server hard disk supports RAID for redundant backup. It can guarantee data without problems when a hard disk is damaged.
