How Win8/WinRT uses files and folders

  

The File Explorer (formerly known as Windows File Explorer) makes it easy to browse locations and use files and folders on your computer and network.

Open “Explorer by: swipe from the right edge of the screen to the middle, click "Search" (If you use the mouse, point to the top right corner of the screen, then point the pointer Move down, click “Search”), enter “Explorer> in the search box, and then click or click "Application" and "Resource Manager".

Understanding the different parts of the File Explorer window

Here is a typical window and its components:

1. Navigation Pane

Use the navigation pane to access all locations: folders that have been added to your Favorites list, your library, drives on your computer, and other computers on your network. Click or click on a location on the file list to view its contents, or click or click the arrow in the navigation pane to expand a location. To browse the drives on your computer and the folders on them, expand “Computer”.

Use the “up” button to open the location where you saved the folder you viewed (sometimes called the parent folder).

3. Ribbon

Use the Ribbon to perform common tasks such as copying, moving, creating new folders, sending emails, compressing projects, and changing views. The tab will change to show additional tasks that apply to the selected item. For example, if you select “Computer” in the navigation pane, the tabs displayed on the ribbon will be different from the tabs that appear when you select a folder in the "Music Library". If you don't see the ribbon, click or click the "Expand ribbon" button at the top right or press Ctrl F1.

4. Address Bar

Use the address bar to enter or select a location. Click or click on a part of the path to enter the level, or click or click at the end of the path to select the path to copy.

5. File List

This is the location where the current folder or library content is displayed. It's also where you're looking for search results after entering a search term in the search box.

6. Column Headings

In the "Details" view, you can use column headings to change how files are organized in a file list. For example, you can click or click “Modify Date> Title to sort by date (most recently used files are at the top). If you click or click the column header again, the oldest file is placed first. Enter a word or phrase in the search box to find items in the current folder or library . The search begins immediately after typing. So, for example, when you type “B”, all files whose names begin with the letter B will appear in the file list.

8. Status Bar

Use the status bar to quickly see the total number of items in a location, or the number of items selected and their total size.

9.Details Pane

Use the details pane to view the most common properties associated with the selected file. File properties provide more details about the file, such as the author, the date the file was last changed, and any descriptive tags that may have been added to the file. If you don't see the details pane, click or click the “View” tab, then click or click “Details pane”.

10. Preview Pane

Use the preview pane to view the contents of a file, such as an Office document, without having to open it in the app. If you don't see the preview pane, click or click the “View” tab, then click or click “Preview Pane”.
