The little-known Documents and settings folder

The Documents and Settings folder is the folder used to store user configuration information in the Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 operating system. By default, under the root directory of the system partition, including: Administrator, All Users, Default User, and user folders, mastering the relevant knowledge of this folder will bring us a lot of convenience in optimizing the system. Below we use windows2003 as an example to solve the mystery of the Documents and settings folder.

First, recognize the Documents and settings folder

Documents and Settings store some information about the user's current desktop environment, application settings and personal data. The user profile also contains all the things that the user created when logging into the computer, such as network connection, desktop size, number of colors, mouse settings, “start”menu and web server. When we log in to Windows 2000/XP/200, the system will automatically create a configuration file for us. At the same time, by providing each user with the same desktop as when they last logged into the computer, the user profile provides a consistent desktop environment for each user. Mastering the relevant knowledge of this folder will bring us a lot of convenience in optimizing the system. Below we take windows xp as an example to understand the following application of this folder in practice.

Second, make multi-user data sharing more convenient:

windows xp supports multi-user operations, each user needs to log in with their own username and password. And each user will produce a folder named after the user name in the Documents and settings directory, where the current user's program settings and system configuration information are stored. If multiple users want to use the programs and files on the computer together, we can easily share data with multiple users through Documents and settings.

(1) Let multiple users share the start menu and desktop:

1. Involved folder:

Username/Start Menu All Users\\Start Menu

2. Folder function:

The "Start" menu is a folder for storing the contents of each user's "Start" menu, starting with each user in the system. ” The programs in the menu are composed of two parts, some of them are stored in the “Start Menu” under the “User Name” folder; the other part is stored in the “All Users\\Start Menu” &rdquo ;in.

3. Application: In the “User Name” folder, the “Start” menu stores the shortcuts of the program copied when the current user installs the system; and “All” The Users\\Start menu & rdquo; folder stores the programs shared by each user.

If we want to have a shortcut to all the programs in the computer in the start menu of each user in our system, it is convenient for us to run the program. In fact, all users need to be able to use all the programs in the system. We can copy the shortcuts that need to share the program to the <quo; All Users\\Start Menu” folder. Then copy the shortcuts of all the programs under the “Start” menu in the “Start” menu under the username to the “All Users\\Start Menu”. When we install the program later, we just need to change the copy path of the shortcut to the "All Users\\" "Start" menu. In this way, after installing the program, its shortcuts will be copied directly to the “All Users\\Start Menu” folder. When modifying, type "“Regedit" in the "Run" dialog box to open the Registry Editor. Then expand the KEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Shell Folders branch and find it in the key value on the right. “Programs” sub-key, double-click the sub-key to pop up a & ldquo; edit string & rdquo; dialog box, in the following "Numerical data" item path is changed to "C:\\Documents and Settings\\teather\\" Start menu\\Programs

Tip: In this regard, we can also share the desktop files of each user.

(2) It is more convenient for multiple users to access the Internet:

1. Folders involved:

Favorites: This folder is located in each user name directory.

2, folder function:

When we go online, our favorite URLs will remain in this folder.

3, Application:

Users who frequently access the Internet will bookmark their favorite website addresses in the favorites, which is convenient for future use. However, if we enter other users, we also need to re-collect the required website address. If you put the URLs stored in each user in the same folder, you can quickly find the favorite websites under any user. . When modifying, first specify a folder with a favorite URL, and then copy the URLs in the favorites under other usernames to that folder. In order for us to save the URL of each user's collection in this folder in the future, we need to modify the path of the folder in the registry. Start the Registry Editor, find the Shell Folders branch according to the above aspects, then double-click the "Favorites" key in the branch to open the "Edit String" dialog box of the sub-key, in the dialog box. In the Value data & rdquo; item, you can enter the location of the specified favorites. Other users are then modified in this way. In the future, each user's favorite website will be saved in the specified folder. Previous123Next page Total 3 pages
