How to use Microsoft Windows Problem Recovery Console

The Recovery Console is a command-line tool that can be used to repair Windows if the computer does not start properly. You can launch the Recovery Console from the Windows Server 2003 CD; or, if you have previously installed the Recovery Console on your computer, you can start the Recovery Console at startup.

If you use the "Last Known Good Configuration" startup option, but did not succeed, and you can not start the computer in "safe mode", use "Recovery Console." Microsoft recommends that you use this Recovery Console method only if you are an advanced user and can use basic commands to determine and locate the driver and file in question.

To use the Recovery Console, perform the following steps:
  1. Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, then re- Start your computer.
  2. When the system prompt is displayed during text mode installation, press the R key to launch the Recovery Console.

You can use the "Recovery Console" to do the following:
  3. to access the drives on your computer.
  4. Enable or disable device drivers or services.
  5. Copy files from the Windows Server 2003 installation CD or copy files from other removable media. For example, you can copy the deleted files you want.
  6. Create a new boot sector and a new master boot record (MBR). You will need to do this if there is a problem caused by an existing boot sector.
