Modify Hosts File

in Windows Vista When you modify the Hosts file or Lmhosts file in Windows Vista, two errors may occur.

Error message 1

Access denied C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\ hosts

Error message 2

Cannot create file C:\\ Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts.

Please confirm that the path and file name are correct.

This issue occurs even when you log in with an account that has administrative credentials.

Alternatives

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click “Start”, click “All Programs”, Click “Accessories", right-click “Notepad”, then click “Run as administrator”.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click “Allow”.

2. Open the Hosts file or the Lmhosts file, make the necessary changes, and click “Save” on the “Edit” menu.
