Modify the Hosts file or Lmhosts file to solve the problem

When we modify the Hosts file or the Lmhosts file in our Vista operating system, there may be two kinds of errors: denial of access, failure to create files, what causes the modification of Hosts and Lmhosts files to cause such failures, followed by I will discuss the solution to the problem of modifying the Hosts and Lmhosts files.

Symptom

Error message 1: Access denied C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts

Error message 2: Cannot create file C:\\Windows\\ System32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts. Please confirm that the path and file name are correct. This issue occurs even when you log in with an account that has administrative credentials.

Failure Analysis

The role of the Hosts file is to resolve the domain name, which is similar to the role of the DNS server. It is only resolved according to the corresponding relationship in the Hosts file. If the domain name to be queried does not exist in the file. Then, it is queried through the DNS server. That is, Hosts > local DNS server. The Lmhosts file is used to parse Netbios.

Due to the Vista mechanism, all operations in the system folder, including moving files, also need to be confirmed. Therefore, in Vista, if you want to change the Hosts or Lmhosts file, there will be a problem of denying access.

Troubleshooting

1. Click “Start”, click “All Programs, click “Accessories", right click “Notepad” , then click “run as administrator”. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click “Allow”.
