Solve network failures caused by Windows XP SP2

Recently, many friends have reported that after installing SP2, some very normal web applications have had strange problems. So, is SP2 really as full of BUG as everyone thinks? The following is a question for some of the problems encountered after applying SP2, and the reasons and solutions are answered one by one. I hope that I can help you in the process of using SP2.

Because the "starting point" of Windows XP SP2 security design is too high, the system has opened a lot of security services by default, so many users can not quickly adapt to SP2, which leads to some application problems frequently appear. Solving these problems also requires some skill.

OE can't display pictures

Some friends who use Outlook Express report that the mail received through OE can't display the pictures in the mail, but the same mail received by Foxmail does not have this problem.

The first thing to say is that this problem is caused by the SP2's specially developed attachment manager security policy for OE.

We know that spam cannot be replied because spam has no purpose. The sender does not know whether the email address is authentic or not. If the recipient replies to spam, it is equal to telling the sender. The person's mailbox is valid.

But it doesn't seem to be a problem to reply to spam now, because the sender will send some images directly saved on the server as email attachments. The normal OE will automatically receive the email from the web server. Download this image, because the download process will be recorded by the server, so the sender can easily know which mailbox is in use. In SP2, in order to prevent this trick, the function of displaying the image attachment when the OE receives the mail is prohibited by default, which is why the OE cannot display the mail picture.

Solution: When receiving the mail, click the “Click here to download the picture” in the message in the middle of the mail window. To display images for all messages, click Tools→Options in OE to uncheck the “Block images and other external content in HTML emails” option in the Security tab.

Sharing failure

After installing SP2, some LAN users can find the shared printer that can be searched and printed. It can't be found in the network neighborhood.

This is because after Windows XP is installed, Windows Firewall is fully enabled by default, which means all network connections for computers running Windows XP SP2, including wired LAN and wireless LAN, dialing, and Windows Firewall is enabled for virtual private network (VPN) connections. At the same time, this problem occurs because Windows Firewall prohibits "file and printer sharing" by default.

Solution: Enter the “Local Area Connection” property window for the LAN connection, click the “Settings” button in the “Advanced” tab setting interface, and select “Exceptions” in the “Windows Firewall” interface that pops up. The File and Printer Sharing option in the Programs and Services list of the tab settings interface.

Alerts when accessing the network

Some users who have just installed SP2 ask why the "Windows Security Alert" prompt box pops up when FTP, QQ chat, QQ game, MSN Messenger login. ? What are the security risks of these programs?

In fact, this is caused by the Windows Firewall feature added by SP2. Its use is somewhat similar to the famous "Skynet Firewall", we have to manually set the network access status of the application. When the Windows Firewall is in the "Enable (recommended) no exception" state, all packets will be blocked. This function can better solve the troubles caused by network attacks and malicious programs.

Solution: When using the application, click the "Unblock" button in the pop-up "Windows Security Alert" dialog box.

Some images in HTML files cannot be displayed

Some users report that after installing SP2, sometimes when opening an HTML file in IE, an ActiveX error message will appear and the image will not display properly. .

This issue may be caused by the enhanced security features in SP2. By default, SP2 enables security policies that help users prevent malicious attacks.

Solution: Open the Registry Editor and go to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicro

softInternet ExplorerMainFeatureControlFEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN" branch and set the values of the "iexplore.exe" and "explorer.exe" keys on the right side of the window. Restart Windows by changing to "0".

Tip: When the value of the FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN subkey is set to 1, Windows XP SP2 will implement restrictions such as "Disable ActiveX", "Disable Java", and "Prompt Script Running" for Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. .
