First, the type of fonts in Windows

There are many kinds of fonts under Windows, which can be divided into raster fonts (.FON) and scalable fonts; they can also be divided into screen fonts, print fonts, and print and screen. Applicable fonts. Raster fonts are stored in bitmap files and are created by displaying a series of points on the screen or on paper. Many programs rely on these fonts. Win2000 supports a total of five raster fonts: Courier, MS Sans Serif, MS Serif, Small, and Symbol fonts. Scalable fonts contain a font scaling mechanism, and TrueType fonts (TTF) are scalable fonts for both print and screen. The TrueType font format was developed jointly by Apple and Microsoft in the United States, and was first used in Apple's Macintosh series and Microsoft Windows 3.1. Screen fonts are fonts used in various types of windows, directory windows, text windows, phone book windows, lookup table windows, and so on.

The two most widely used fonts in Windows are TrueType and ATM (Adobe Type Manager) Postscript fonts. Both font standards describe the font outline in a curvilinear manner, so both can output very high quality glyphs. Among them, TrueType font is the standard font of Windows. It is commonly used in text display and printing. The biggest advantage is that it can easily convert the font outline into a curve, which can fill the curve and make various colors. The screen and print output have the same effect; It is spreadable, portable, application-independent, and has a small storage space. Postscript is a document description technology published by Adobe in the United States in 1985, and uses this technology to create a font called Postscript technology. Postscript can accurately describe the plane, draw any text and graphics, and is very commonly used in printing and other fields.

The most important symbol font is "Marlett”. It is one of the system fonts for Windows, the minimize, maximize, restore, close buttons on the right side of the window, as well as radio buttons, check boxes, and “√ ” in front of menu items. & ldquo; ▲ & rdquo; and other symbols, are used in the font.

More symbolic fonts are used, “Symbol”,“Wingdings”,“Monotype Sorts”, and <MTExtra”. “Symbol” fonts are often used in mathematical formulas, which contain uppercase and lowercase Greek letters, numbers, operators, set symbols, and other symbols; the "Wingdings" fonts that provide similar clip art fonts bring together the ideograms commonly used in everyday life. Symbol; <;MT Extra" There are only a few mathematical symbols used to expand the “Symbol” font. The symbol font “Webdings” is a supplement to the "Marlett" and "Wingdings" fonts.

In addition, some software will also install some special symbol bodies, such as the "Map Symbols" used for various signs on the map and the "Kingsoft Phonetic Plain" font used to mark the phonetic symbols.

Second, which fonts are not required

Deleting some font files can free up hard disk space. Normally, it is safe to delete unusable fonts. For example, if you don't have a pen plotter, you can safely delete the plotter fonts Modern, Roman, and script. If only TrueType or Postscript (ATM) fonts are used, the raster fonts Courier, MS Sans Serif, MS-Serif, Small Font, Symbol, etc. can be deleted. Chinese fonts generally have several megabytes, or even dozens of megabytes. You can delete some Chinese fonts that are useless, but don't delete them, because it is the default Chinese font. Screen font files (extension .FON) should never be deleted, otherwise the text in some dialog boxes will become garbled. The font of .SYS is the system font. These fonts are used in system prompts and icon descriptive text. After deletion, the system may crash. There are also some symbol fonts, such as Marlett, Windings and other fonts, which can't be deleted.

Third, master the font settings in Windows

1. View system fonts

Select “ Start /Settings /Control Panel & rdquo;, in the open control panel window Double-click the "font" icon to open the font management window. In this window, you can view the font types in the system, compare fonts by similarity (helping you decide whether to delete similar fonts), preview (double-click on a font), print (“file/print”), Delete (“file/delete”) font.

2. Font Preview

In the font management window, double-click a font file icon to pop up the font preview window of the font, and some information about the font is listed in the window. Such as font file size, version number, copyright, and display different sizes of English, numbers, symbols or Chinese characters.

3.Install Fonts

In the Font View Management window, select the menu “File/Install New Fonts” to bring up the program window for installing new fonts. Select the drive where the font file to be installed is located. The install font program will automatically scan the disk for font files and list them in the "Font List" window. Select a font and click “OK", the installer will copy the font file to the system font folder and register it in the registry, and then you can use the font. The option to copy the font to the Fonts folder in the window determines the location where the font is saved after installation.
