Patching Web Servers

For network users, the biggest concern is the security and stability of the network. In addition to installing anti-virus, firewall, anti-hacking software, etc., it is necessary to "patch" the server in time.

Most of the school's LAN server uses the Windows 2000 Server operating system. Below I will use Windows 2000 as an example to introduce some common knowledge of "patching".

Why do you want to "patch"

Windows 2000 Service Pack ("patch" for Windows 2000) refers to the upgrade patch developed by Microsoft for its Windows 2000 operating system. The latest release of the program is Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (hereafter referred to as SP2). This patch not only fixes 500 known bugs in Windows 2000, but also automatically upgrades the Windows 2000 encryption system to 128 bits. It includes patches for application compatibility, Active Directory, Web Server, Operations and Management, Networking, Security, and Settings.

The biggest advantage of SP2 is that it upgrades the Windows 2000 encryption system to 128-bit and supports all encryption services in Windows 2000, including Kerberos, encrypted file system, RAS, RPC, SSL/TLS, CryptoAPI, Terminal Services RDP, and IPSec. And if SP2 is uninstalled after installation, the system will continue to use 128-bit encryption. Installing Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 can make your server system more secure and stable.
 
  considerations

  before installing SP2 should pay attention to a few things:

1, install SP2 should pay attention to quit all current applications ( Including virus monitoring programs) to prevent abnormal conditions such as the interruption of the upgrade patch.

2, in order to prevent installation accidents, it is best to make an emergency repair disk and fully back up system files (including registry files). To make a system emergency repair disk, just click "Start → Programs → Accessories → System Tools → Backup" and click the [Emergency Repair Disk] button to create an emergency repair disk.

3. Check the free space of the disk. Installing SP2 on Windows 2000 Professional requires 440MB (maximum 710MB during installation), 550MB for SP2 on Windows 2000 Server (maximum 830MB during installation), and the disk capacity required to install SP2 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server More bigger.

4, SP2 can be installed on various versions of Windows 2000, and SP2 includes all the patches in SP1, so we only need to install SP2, which will make us feel like Windows 2000" Patching is very convenient.

How to "Patch"

After downloading the SP2 upgrade patch on the Internet, double-click to install it. This file is a very large archive, so it takes a few minutes to unpack. After the upgrade patch has been "verified" and "extracted" to the upgrade file, you are required to accept the license agreement.

After "Checking Windows 2000 Configuration" and "Backing Up Files", SP2 upgrades the patch to prepare and save the file, and then installs a new file to update the Windows 2000 system files.

After the installation is complete, the system prompts that it must be restarted. After the system restarts, the SP2 upgrade patch ends, and the entire installation process takes about 10 minutes.

How do you know that the current system is "patched"? There are three ways to view, only a more detailed description is given here. Right click "My Computer" in Windows 2000 Server, click "Manage" to open the "Computer Management" program, click "System Summary" under "System Information" to see that the version shown in the right frame is just upgraded. Service Pack 2, the patch has been "filled" to Windows 2000.
After the server is "patched", the system is more secure and reliable. For the security of your server, don't forget to "patches" them!
