Federated Search in Windows 7

In Vista, Microsoft introduced enhanced desktop search to help users quickly find files, emails and other things on the computer. With the release of Windows Search 4.0, the new search performance is even better by adding a series of necessary features for IT vendors.

Windows 7's desktop search incorporates federated search capabilities to search for things outside of your local computer. Now you can search for things on the web from your local computer. The technology is based on OpenSearch and RSS formats. Because its standards are open, users can easily build their own personal search tools. For example, you can search for content on Flickr through the resource manager on your computer.

At the moment, there are already many personal search tools available for download:

Flickr Search Connector

YouTube Search Connector

Google News Search Connector >

Google Blogs Search Connector

Twitter Search Connector

MSN Search

Deviant Art Search

I have to admit that the federated search feature looks promising. More and more websites are now adding OpenSearch support to attract Windows 7 users. This is not new to Microsoft because OpenSearch was integrated in IE 7 and Sharepoint search.

Although there are no official documents yet, I believe that with the release of Windows 7 Beta, the developer tools for Windows 7 Beta will be released.
