If your Windows 8 was upgraded from Windows Developer Preview or Windows 8 Consumer Preview, and you did not format the partition during the installation process, the files used in earlier versions of Windows will be stored in the Windows.old folder. . The type of file in this folder depends on your computer. After using Windows 8 for a while (for example, a week or two), if you are sure that your files and settings are restored to the desired location, you can use “Disk Cleanup<;Delete Windows.old space to safely reclaim disk space .
Warning:
Before using “Disk Cleanup, make sure all your files and settings are in the expected location in Windows 8. The deletion of the Windows.old folder cannot be undone.
Open “Disk Cleanup by: Sweeping from the right edge of the screen to the middle, click "Search” (If you use the mouse, point to the top right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down, then Click "Search”), enter Disk Cleanup in the search box, and then click or click “Set" and “free disk space by deleting unwanted files”.
If you are prompted to select a drive, select the drive on which you just installed Windows and click “OK”.
On the "Disk Cleanup" tab of the "Disk Cleanup" tab, click “Clean System Files”.
If the system prompts you to select a drive again, select the drive on which you just installed Windows and click “OK”.
Check the "Previous Windows Install" checkbox and any other checkboxes that correspond to the files you want to delete, then click “OK”.
In the message that appears, click “Delete Files”.
