What if the Win8 system becomes a Windows To Go environment?

Windows 8 provides a new Windows To Go function that allows us to transfer the system from the hard disk to the mobile storage for the purpose of using our own working environment anytime, anywhere. . However, in some specific cases, we will encounter the problem of using a normal system to become a Windows To Go environment, resulting in the inability to use the corresponding Windows applications and stores. This article will solve this problem.

Windows To Go is a fully managed enterprise Windows 8 desktop that runs on a bootable external USB Stick. It enables IT organizations to support the “Bring Your Own PC” trend, enabling companies to allow conditional employees to access the corporate environment without compromising security. See http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/products-and-technologies/windows-8/enterprise-edition.aspx#bk_wintogo

Windows To Go is on Windows 8 The Enterprise Edition (available in a 90-day free trial) is simply a portable Windows environment.

The problem I encountered before is that the author's system Crash, finally fixed through various methods, can enter the system, but will encounter some problems when opening the application, such as the error in minesweeping

I am prompted to enter the store, and after entering the store, I will be prompted to be in the Windows To Go environment and cannot use the store. I want to adjust this option in the control panel, but I have encountered such a prompt:

Each time the upgrade says to close the current Workspace to adjust the setting, it is not the shutdown and … … then boot it is still like this … …

There is also a more magical feature, the author is to put the image into the U disk through Microsoft's official Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool, and then use it to start the system, so if you start it, you can directly enter Instead of prompting me to fix the computer (no installation interface). And after entering directly, it is a normal working interface, not a Windows To Go environment. Once the U disk is unplugged, the system crashes, so at that time the system considers the U disk to be a "true" system disk. The author then used the U disk as a boot tool, and the original boot function was gone, so I needed to find a cure.

Solution

First open the run box with Win+R, enter regedit to open the registry

Find the item in the open registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl

Here you will find a DWORD item named PortableOperatingSystem with a value of 1, and delete the item (or set the value to 0) to restart.

Because I have already re-doed the U disk before, I don’t know how many times, EFI and MBR have all been made, so the tips in the post are clear. All the partitions are ignored.

Note : Before the author restarts, a USB flash drive and an eSATA external hard disk are inserted. When the computer is turned off, the hard disk light is on (there is always read and write operation), but the USB flashing light is not blinking (that is, no data is passed) and the eSATA hard disk does not sound ( It should also be no data, so it should be what is done on the local hard drive. This process lasted for 3 to 5 minutes. Since the SSD is used as the system disk, the data volume of 3 to 5 minutes should be around 15G. After the indicator light is off, the system still does not shut down, and finally the method of strong shutoff is adopted.

After booting up, you are back to normal state. Of course, your previous applications need to pay attention. For example, the Maps application in the figure below has a small fork

You go to the app store to view the information:

In the store you will be prompted to fix the app, click on the fix, there will be a system prompt after the repair is completed:

you can then use it again The application!

It is observed that Windows To Go affected applications are: mail, calendar, contacts, pictures, maps, messages, Xbox games, etc. that are associated with your Microsoft account.
