How to use the Windows Jump List function?

Starting from Windows 7, there is more "jump list" in the system. This function is further enhanced in subsequent Windows versions. Maybe you think this thing is too simple, however, is this simple jump list, are you using it enough? The following small series will introduce you to the Windows Jump List function. Interested friends can refer to this article to see it!

1. Three faces of the jump list

The jump list of Windows 7 is not only displayed on the taskbar, but also has a jump list in the start menu. Windows 8.1 continues the taskbar jump list, while Windows 10 adds a more user-friendly "home page" to the jump list.

The taskbar jump list integrates both the Windows XP taskbar and the quick launch bar, and is enhanced on this basis (enhanced features are described later). After opening an application, document, folder or web link on the taskbar, right-clicking on the icon will display a list of items that dynamically change from object to object. This list is what we call "jump list" ”. With the jump list, we can easily complete the work that can be done in the application with the mouse click below half (Figure 1).

In addition to the separate jumps of the program or document on the taskbar, there is a pair in the Windows 7 Start menu. Jump to the list of categories to manage the "good place" & rdquo;. After clicking the Start menu, at the top of the page we will find that the most recently operated project (whether it is an application or another project) will have an expandable triangle icon behind it. Click on it to display the group associated with the app or project. For quick projects, just click on the link you have already used to open the project you have used; or click on the main recommendation function of the project to enable the use of special features (Figure 2).

Small Tip: A new type of "jump list",

In the Windows 10 operating system, except In the true sense of the hybrid system start menu, a special "start" menu is introduced, which is the "home page" in the resource manager, which is actually another jump list of the entire resource. , is a special "jump list" (Figure 3). All of this is to provide greater convenience for users.

2. Two functions of the jump list

The first function of the jump list is to reduce the mouse operation frequency. In the past when we accessed documents, pictures, songs or other data, we always need to open the program soft and open these files. By jumping to the list, you can not only directly access the files, pictures, songs, etc. you need, but you can also perform specific tasks in one step without having to start the application first. For example, we copy a wonderful quotation on the Internet and want to store it in a TXT file. After copying the text, just right click on the EmEditor application icon on the taskbar and select the “New and Paste” command. The editing and collection of web documents can be realized in one step.

(Figure 4 Using the EmEditor Jump List command to collect the text in one step)

Another function of the jump list is to reduce the confusion. By jumping into a list, the actions associated with an application, folder, or document are grouped together, eliminating the traditional hassle of finding pairs in a bunch of categories or types in the traditional sense.

Small Tips:

We can think of a jumplist as a special mini-start & rdquo; menu. If the Windows 7 or Windows 10 Start menu is the "Start" menu for the entire system. Then, the jump list of an application such as Word can be regarded as the "Start" menu of the application. A jumplist of a type of document can be viewed as a "start" menu for this type of document. Starting from here, it is more convenient than starting with "starting".

3. Use the special "Start Menu" &

Each application's jump list is different. Use “Drawing  For a while, the most recently used graphic file will be saved on the jump list; after using Word for a while, the recently used document will be saved on the jump list. However, jump lists are not just as simple as document type associations. If we are very familiar with a program, in order to use it quickly, we should dig deeper into the useful functions in the transit list. Let us give two examples to illustrate.

Let the diary file always in the front

Create a "diary” file with Notepad, this file is used every day, if you put it on the desktop, Easily add confusion or cause loss, it is better to put the file in a safe place, and then fix the Notepad icon on the taskbar, and then fix the “my diary.txt” in the jump list at the top of the list. This way, when you write a diary later, you can open the diary by right-clicking on the icon.

(Figure 5 Let “ my diary & rdquo; normal is fixed at the top of the list)

Multiple locked frequently visited sites

If we often go to several websites, commonly used You can add a URL collection to your browser or add a shortcut to your desktop. But the former needs to open the browser first, and the latter will increase the confusion of the desktop. In fact, we can fix multiple URLs together at the top of the list by the fixed function of the jump list (Figure 6).

(Figure 6 use the multi-fixed top function of the URL)

Tip: Pin your favorite folder

The jump list can not only pin the application, Documents and URLs, you can also pin folders to them. If we always work in a fixed four or five folders, we can pin them directly to the taskbar or explorer. Simply drag the folder to the taskbar or the Explorer icon with the right button and it will be automatically pinned to the jump bar of the taskbar or explorer icon (Figure 7). Then you can access these folders directly here later. Pin the folder here instead of the desktop, which is a great way to clean up your desktop.

(Figure 7 will be used to fix the commonly used folder in the resource manager)
