How does Windows Server 2008 change the server name and administrator password?

How does Windows Server 2008 change the server name and administrator password? When you initialize, you will also encounter the situation of renaming the server and modifying the ADMINISTRATOR password. These tasks are very important for the security and management of the server.

Renaming Servers

When it comes to server and client naming, weird things often happen. Few companies are willing to spend a lot of time thinking about how to name their computers. Some servers are named Zhang San, Li Si, and Wang Wu. But if the number of servers grows from the original 2 to 20 and 200, we will immediately enter a "chaotic world".

Don't think about how to plan, first complete the task. You can also see that after Windows Server 2008 is installed, the default is to randomly define a name for the installed computer, for example, "WIN-PNK6NI00H89", I saw a simple computer name in the task table: W2K8S1, But I really don't know what this means? Regardless of this, the computer name change function is provided in the initial task, and the computer name can be renamed. The operation of this task is relatively simple.

Click on the "provide computer name and domain" hyperlink, in the "System Properties" dialog box, add content in the computer description, such as: & ldquo; network infrastructure server W2K8S1 & rdquo;, here is expressed as &ldquo Contoso's first server " (the company name is kept secret, and later added a map). Click the “Change” button and type the name of the computer in the "computername" text box on the "computername/domain change" page, as shown in Figure 1.

Click the “OK” button to display the "computername/domain change" dialog box, single Click the "OK" button and restart the server to complete the computer name change.

In order to better use and reduce the burden on administrators, we can design a solution based on computer usage, functions, departments, carried business systems, or physical locations. For example, the first server in the engineering department can be called “EngServer01”, and the technical department is called “TechServer01”. We can also use the server name & ldquo;CorpMail01”,“CorpWeb02” etc. These names can directly remind us of the purpose of the server. However, the naming scheme of the server should be as simple as possible, otherwise it will be the same as the name of "random" after Windows Server 2008 is installed by default.

By the way, I found a suggestion from Microsoft:

The recommended length of the computer name is 15 characters or less.

Although Chinese naming is also supported (recommended length is 7 characters or less), it is best to follow Internet standard characters.

Standard characters include:

numbers from 0 to 9, uppercase and lowercase letters from A to Z, and hyphens (-).

The maximum length of a computer name is 63 bytes.

If the name is longer than 15 bytes (15 characters in most languages and 7 characters in some languages), computers running Windows NT 4.0 and earlier will pass the name before 15 bytes to identify the computer.

Computer naming cannot be all numbers.

If your computer is a member of a domain, you must choose a different name than the other computers in the domain. If you want to avoid name conflict errors, be sure to plan your computer to be unique within the domain, workgroup, or network you manage. If the computer is a member of a domain and it contains multiple operating systems, a unique computer name must be used for each installed operating system. This requirement also applies to computers with multiple identical operating systems installed, and their names are also unique.

Modifying the ADMINISTRATOR password

There are several ways to change the password for an account, such as the Administration Console, Server Manager, User Account Control for standard steps, command line mode, shortcut key combinations, and more. In addition, the correct setting password is important for the security of Windows Server 2008. Or do the task in the easiest way, and then discuss the precautions for password settings. Press the [Ctrl+Alt+Del] key combination at the same time, and click the link in the pop-up “Change Password” interface.

On the Change Password Wizard page, in the top input box, enter the original password. Then type the new password in the two input boxes below, for example: “P@ssW0rd”. In the case of ensuring that the last two passwords are the same, click the arrow to the right. After the password prompt has been updated, click “OK" to complete the task of changing the password.

After completing the task, let's analyze if the password you entered is 123456, or something simpler than the "combination format". At this point, the system will repeatedly prompt an error, saying that the password does not meet the requirements. In the case of "empty" passwords, network access is not allowed. So what is the reason for this?

Windows Server 2008 requires administrators to set passwords that must meet complexity requirements. This is a mandatory account security policy (this security policy can also be revoked, but not recommended). If the policy is already enabled, the password must meet the following minimum requirements:

Do not explicitly include a user account name or a part of the user's full name

at least six characters in length

Contains characters from three of the following four categories:

English uppercase letters (from A to Z)

English lowercase letters (from a to z)

10 Basic numbers (from 0 to 9)

Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)

That means there must be at least three different characters in the password, such as Windows 2008 . Where W is the size of the letter, indows are lowercase letters, 2008 is a number, there are exactly three different characters.

The above is the detailed steps to change the server name and modify the administrator password in Server 2008. Thanks to the 51CTO user Li Yang for writing such a wonderful article sharing, this small series will continue to share with everyone. Good article, I hope everyone will continue to pay attention to this, thank you for reading.
