Microsoft removes 260 character path length limits in Windows 10 Redstone Preview

Computer Store News: Microsoft has provided Windows 10 Build 14352 to testers, which is one of the preview versions of Windows 10 Redstone. There is a long-awaited change that Microsoft has not publicly announced. With the help of the new strategy, users can now remove the 260-character path length limit in Windows, allowing users to perform normal operations on files regardless of their path or file name. However, in Windows 10 Build 14352, users also need to manually remove this restriction.

As a user, click the Start menu, type “GPEDIT.MSC”, start the Local Group Policy Editor, and navigate to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows \\CurrentVersion\\Group Policy Objects\\{48981759-12F2-42A6-A048-028B3973495F}Machine\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Policies

Look for the entry for “LongPathsEnabled”, if it doesn't exist, just right click on it Policy, choose to create a new DWORD (32-bit), name it "LinPathsEnabled" (without the quotation marks), set its value to 1.

As you can see, Microsoft is making this change not only for Win32 software, but also for Windows Store apps, as they are critical for the future of Windows. Other applications also need to be updated by the developer to support the elimination of the 260 character limit.
