In this version of Win8.1 Update 1, Microsoft just turned on the Direct Boot to Desktop option for non-touchscreen PC devices. Even if it is not turned on, it will be launched directly to the desktop after the update.


The touch screen device will still launch directly to the “Start Screen”, and the touch screen device will hide the “Start Screen” button by default, but the search button remains. – That is, the shutdown option is only displayed for non-touch devices. Another new change, the Windows Store app (Metro app) title bar will be hidden by default on the touch screen device, but The title bar is also displayed when the mouse is over the top of the screen. Similarly, when the mouse is moved to the bottom of the Windows Store app, the desktop taskbar is displayed.


Windows 8.1 Update 1 also has the option to display the Windows Store app in the taskbar. When enabled, the Windows Store app icon can be displayed in the taskbar with a thumbnail preview. The taskbar at the bottom of the Windows Store app also needs to be turned on.

Open a picture or music file on a touch device, which is opened by photo and Xbox music app by default, and non-touch is opened by Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Media Player.


Other changes include the new "Disk Space" option in PC Settings to manage the hard drive usage of applications and files. Moreover, SkyDrive has been replaced by the new OneDrive name.


According to Mary Jo Foley, Windows 8.1 Update 1 is expected to be launched on April 8.
