"Administrators Only" appears when using the Windows Update website (limited to tube

  

SYMPTOMS
When you try to use a Windows Update site, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Administrators Only

To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged On as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure... even if you are already logged in as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group, you Still receiving this message.

Note: For more information about the Windows Update site, see the "More Information" section of this article. Cause
This can happen if you are not logged in as an administrator, the computer you are using is protected by a firewall, or the computer you are using is connected to the Internet through a proxy server. This can also happen if the restrictions on some specific registry keys are not set correctly, or if the %Systemroot%\\System32\\Catroot2 folder is damaged. Solution
Warning: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from improper use of the registry can be resolved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Important note: If you are accessing the Internet through a local area network (LAN) using a proxy or firewall, contact your network administrator to ensure A firewall or proxy server is configured to allow you to use Windows Update.
  1. Log in as an administrator or use the Run As command from an administrator account as described in the Windows Update error message. Try to access the Windows Update Web site again. If the issue is resolved, stop troubleshooting.
  2. Click Start and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
  4. Find and select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\WindowsUpdate

  5. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
  6. Click Add and type Everyone in the dialog that appears.
  7. Click Check Names and then click OK.
  8. Select Everyone in the Group or User Name list.
  9. Under Permissions for Everyone, click to select the Full Control check box in the Allow column.

    Please note that the Allow column of the Read check box is now selected.
  10. Select each user in the Group or User Name list and verify that no check boxes are selected in the Deny column. Click to clear any check boxes selected in the Deny column.
  11. Click the Advanced button, click to select the "Replace permission entries on all child objects" check box, and then click OK.
  12. If you are prompted to confirm, click Yes and then click OK to close the dialog.
  13. Try again to access the Windows Update Web site. If the issue is resolved, stop troubleshooting.
  14. Add the following sites to the proxy exceptions list in Internet Explorer:
  15. Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  16. V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  17. Download.Windowsupdate.com
    < Br> To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    2. On the Connections tab, click the dial-up or virtual private network (VPN) connection that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click Settings. If you want to connect to the Internet via a local area network (LAN), click LAN Settings.
    3. Under Proxy Server, click Advanced.
    4. In the Exceptions box, type Windowsupdate.microsoft.com; V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com;Download.Windowsupdate.com and click OK three times.
    5. Try again to access the Windows Update Web site. If the issue is resolved, stop troubleshooting. If the issue is not resolved, remove these proxy exceptions and continue troubleshooting.

    6. Use a proxy connection to enable HTTP 1.1. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
      2. On the Advanced tab, under HTTP 1.1 Settings, click to select the Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections check box.
      3. Click OK and try to access the Windows Update Web site again. If the issue is resolved, stop troubleshooting.

      4. Type the following command at a command prompt, and after you type each command line and press Enter.

        net stop cryptsvc
        ren %systemroot%\\system32\\catroot2 oldcatroot2
        net start cryptsvc

      5. Try to access the Windows Update Web site. If the issue is resolved, stop troubleshooting.
