Internet Connection Sharing Networking Notes

Introduction

ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is a network connection sharing service built into Windows 2000 that makes it easy for home network or small office network users to connect to the Internet.

There are a few things to keep in mind when using ICS:

(1) Computers that have ICS enabled must have two network interfaces: one connected to the internal LAN, usually a network card; and one connected to the Internet Usually it is a Modem or ISDN interface.

(2) To configure ICS, you must have the Administrators group permission.

(3) After the ICS setup is complete, the local network will use the dynamic address allocation mechanism, so this feature should not be configured with other Windows 2000 Server DCs, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or statically configured. The system of IP addresses is used together.

(4) When ICS is enabled, adapters connected to the home or small office network will get a new IP address configuration. There are two cases, one is the system's recommended way to use dynamic allocation, when the ICS-enabled computer acts as a DHCP server; the other is manually set.

Environment and Requirements

The current network environment of the customer is as follows:

Number of computers: 5, including 3 desktops (hereinafter referred to as C1, C2, C3), Two laptops (hereafter referred to as N1, N2);

Current operating system: Windows98 (first edition);

LAN overview: a star pair formed by a 10M 8-port HUB Wait for the network, share data with each other through the network;

Connect the internet mode: Only C1 and N1 can dial up to the Internet, where C1 uses ISDN and N1 uses Modem.

Customer Requirements:

Use existing devices to enable all computers to access the Internet;

Important programs are installed on existing computers or important storage is important The data, so unless you have no choice but to reinstall the operating system.

Connection scheme:

Because C1 is equipped with ISDN equipment and the configuration is relatively high (PIII 850 CPU, 128M memory), it is decided to start the Internet sharing function on C1, and other computers access through C1. Internet.

Since Windows 98 started supporting ICS from the second edition and it was not very stable, I decided to upgrade C1 to Windows 2000 pro.

Server Settings

First, upgrade Windows98 to Windows2000 pro;

Start Windows98, insert Windows2000 pro into the CD-ROM drive, Windows2000 pro installer starts automatically, follow the system prompts, Until the upgrade is complete.

Second, create a new dial-up connection

1. Select “Start”->“Set”->“Network and Dial-up Connection"" Connect ” to start the Network Connection Wizard.

2, skip the welcome screen, select "ld to Internet" in the second page network connection type, the next step.

3. On the first page of the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box that pops up, select “Manually set up an Internet connection or connect via LAN (LAN), the next step.

4. In Step 2, set up your Internet connection page, select “Connect via phone line and modem>, next.

5, in the third step of the Internet account connection information step 1 page, do not select “ use area code and dialing rules & rdquo;, add "ldquo; 163" in the phone number box, the next step.

6. In the Step 2 of the Internet Account Connection Step 3 page, fill in the username and password used for dial-up Internet access, and the next step.

7, in the Step 3 of the Internet account connection information configuration page on your computer, change the connection name to "share 163", the default is OK, the next step.

8. In the 4th step, set the Internet mail account page to select “No”; the next step is to complete the connection wizard.

9. Test the dial-up connection you just created until it is normal.

Third, start ICS

1. "Start”->“Set”->“Network and Dial-up Connection", right-click on the dial we just created Connect “Share 163”, click “Properties" shortcut menu.

2. On the "Share” tab, select the "Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection" checkbox.

3. On the "Share” tab, check the "Enable the demand-dial" checkbox so that any LAN user needs to access the Internet and the server has not established an Internet connection. The server will automatically make a dial-up connection.

4, switch to the "Options" tab, then the system will prompt "When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, the LAN adapter will be set to use the IP address 192.168.0.1". Your computer may lose its connection to other computers on the network. If these computers have static IP addresses, they should be set to automatically obtain an IP address. Do you really need to enable Internet Connection Sharing? ”, select “ is & rdquo;, ICS is started.

5, on the "Options" tab, select the "Redline Redial" dialog box, set the idle time before hanging up to "5 minutes", other settings use the default Just fine.

6. Make sure to quit.

Client Settings

Take N1 as an example. The settings of other machines are similar and will not be repeated.

First, the IP address setting

(a) automatically obtain the IP address

“ control panel & rdquo;-> & ldquo; network & rdquo;, open & ldquo; network ” dialog. Set the TCP/IP attribute of the network card to automatically obtain the IP address and automatically obtain the DNS server address. Make sure to quit.

(2) Manually setting the IP address

Set the address of the computer to "192.168.0.2", the subnet mask is "255.255.255.0”, the gateway is " 192.168.0.1 & rdquo;, the DNS server address is "192.168.0.1", confirm the exit.

(3) Note that if automatic address allocation is used, all machines should use automatic address allocation. If part of the usage is not used, it may cause address conflict.

Second, IE settings

1. Click on the <quo;Internet Options"

2. On the “Connections” tab, click “Don't dial the connection” and click “LAN Settings”.

3, in the "Automatic Configuration", clear the "Automatically detect settings" & "Use automatic configuration scripts" check box.

4. In the "Proxy Server", clear the “Use Proxy Server” checkbox.

Third, other software settings (for example, network ants)

Because there is a dial-up connection on N1, network ants will still use the dial-up connection to download files, remove the built-in modem and use LAN. There is a problem that the file cannot be downloaded when sharing the Internet. There are two solutions:

1. Delete the dial-up connection on N1, the network ant will automatically use the current connection;

2 If you want to use a dial-up connection in the future, you can set it to not use a dial-up connection in the network ant's settings.

Fourth, test

1, ping the server.

2, test the browsing page: open IE, enter “ www.aboutnt.com & rdquo;, if C1 does not have an Internet connection, you can find that C1 will automatically dial the Internet.

3, test the use of other software.

Application and Service Settings

First, configure the web application for the computer sharing this connection

1. Right click on “Share 163” in “Properties” On the "Applications" tab of the dialog box, click “Add”.

2. In the "application name", type an easily recognizable application name.

3, in the "remote server port number", type the remote server port number where the application is located, and then click “TCP” or “UDP”.

4. In “TCP” or “UDP”, or both, type the port number of the primary network to which the application will connect. Some applications require TCP and UDP port numbers.

Second, you need to configure the service to provide users on the remote network

1. Right-click "Share 163", in the "Properties" dialog box, "Services" option On the card, click “Add”.

2. In the "service name", type a service name that is easy to identify.

3. In the "service port number", type the port number of the computer where the service is located, and then click “TCP” or “UDP”.

4. In the "Name or Address of the Server Computer on the Private Network", type the name or TCP/IP address of the computer on the primary network where the service is located.

With the above steps, you can connect your home network or small office network to the Internet. Here, I wish you success!
