XP "STOP 0x0000008e" error message

  
        

When installing Microsoft Windows XP, you may receive a Stop error message similar to one of the following when the installer is running:

STOP 0x0000008e

STOP 0x00000050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

Also, when you troubleshoot by removing all unnecessary hardware devices installed on your computer and continuing to run the installer, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Setup cannot copy the file Setupdd.sys .

Cause This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true: One or more random access memory (RAM) modules installed on the computer are defective. The RAM configuration is not compatible with Windows XP. ... This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

The recommended RAM for running Windows XP is 128 MB. The minimum is 64 MB and the maximum is 4 GB.

For example, if you have two 256 MB memory modules installed on your computer, delete one of them.

Restart your computer and run the installer:

Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive, start your computer, and click “OK> to select the first option screen to Install a copy of Windows XP.

Click “Accept" and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Windows XP installation.

If you still receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, go to step 4.

Remove another memory module or install this RAM into another memory slot.

Restart your computer and re-run the installer.

It may be necessary to restart the computer a few times to determine which memory module is not working properly.
