How to Install the UNIX Print Service

in Windows XP This article describes how to install the Unix print service and configure a printer that supports Remote Line Printer (LPR). If you are using both a Windows 2000 Server print server and a UNIX print server in your network, computers running Windows XP Professional may need to print in both environments. To achieve this, you need to configure both the UNIX print service and the Microsoft Windows print service. To install the UNIX print service, perform the following steps in order:
1. Click Start, Control Panel. 2. In the Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs. 3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components. 4. As shown in Figure 1, in the Windows Components Wizard, select Other Network File and Print Services and click Detail. Figure 1. Adding a UNIX print service 5. The Remote Line Printer (LPR) ports are ideal for servers that need to communicate with host systems such as UNIX or VAX. To configure an LPR printer, perform the following steps in order:
1. In the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, then Printers and Faxes. 2. In the Printer Tasks area, click Add a printer to open the Add Printer Wizard and then click Next. 3. Click Create a new port and select LPR Port. 5. If the LPR port is not available, click Cancel to terminate the wizard. As explained in the previous section of this article, to add an LPR port, you must first install the optional network component -- the UNIX print service. 6. Click Next and the system will provide you with the following information: In the Name or address of server providing LPD box, enter the host Domain Name System (DNS) name of the printer to which you want to add the printer. Or an Internet Protocol (IP) address. The host may be either a TCP/IP printing device with a direct connection or a UNIX computer connected to a printing device. The corresponding domain name is the name given to the host in the Hosts file. In the Name of printer or print queue on that server box, enter the name of the printer identified by the host, which may be the printer itself using a direct connection or a UNXI computer. 7. Follow the steps shown on the screen to step through the steps to install a TCP/IP printer.
