In the past, the .ogg extension was used in any Ogg-supported format; but in 2007, the Xiph.Org Foundation made a request for backward compatibility considerations, leaving .ogg only to the Vorbis format. use. Xiph.Org Foundation's reference implementation of Ogg, the latest version is libogg 1.2.0 released on March 26, 2010. Another version of libog2 can also be found in the Xiv.Org Foundation's SVN package. Both libraries are free software released under the new BSD license.

Because its format is free, and its reference implementation is not in the form of Copyleft, whether it is a free or proprietary, commercial or non-commercial media player, or even some manufacturers' portable media players and GPS receivers All of them use various codecs under Ogg.

MP3 is a lossy compression format, so the compressed data is lossy compared to standard CD music. VORBIS is also lossy compression, but by using a more advanced acoustic model to reduce losses, the same bit rate encoded OGG sounds better than MP3. In addition, there is another reason why the MP3 format is protected by patents. If you want to publish your work in MP3 format, you will need to pay Fraunhofer (invented MP3 company) royalties. And VORBIS has no such problem at all. For fans, the significant benefit of using OGG files is that they can achieve superior sound quality with smaller files. That's why there are so few MP3 encoders and mostly commercial software, because Fraunhofer charges royalties.

In theory, there is no fixed bit rate. Vorbis is designed to encode at bit rates from 16kbps to 128kbps/channel. However, there is no restriction in the specification to encode files in 512kbps or 8kbps.
