Ghost common sense big release

GHOST must have heard of everyone? Today we have summarized the most commonly used methods for you to check and use!

System Backup

System backup using Ghost, there are entire hard disk (Disk) and partition hard disk (Partition) Two ways. Click the Local item in the menu. There are 3 sub-menu in the pop-up menu on the right. Disk indicates backup of the entire hard disk (ie, clone), Partition indicates a single partition of the backup hard disk, and Check indicates that the hard disk or backup file is checked. Is it possible that the backup or restore fails due to partitions, hard disk corruption, and so on. Partitioned backups serve as an individual user to store system data, especially when restoring and copying system partitions.

Select Local→Partition→To Image menu to pop up the hard disk selection window and start the partition backup operation. Click the white hard disk information bar in the window, select the hard disk, enter the window, select the partition to be operated (if there is no mouse, use the keyboard to operate: TAB key to switch, enter key to confirm, direction key to select). In the pop-up window, select the backup directory path and enter the backup file name. Note that the name of the backup file has the GHO suffix name. Next, the program will ask whether to compress the backup data, and give three choices: No means no compression, Fast means that the compression ratio is small and the backup speed is faster, High is the compression ratio but the backup speed is quite slow. Finally, select the Yes button to start the backup of the partitioned hard disk. Ghost backups are quite fast and can be completed without waiting for a long time. The backup files are stored in the set directory with the GHO extension.

System Cloning

The cloning of a hard disk is a backup and restore of the entire hard disk. Select the menu Local→Disk→To Disk, select the source hard disk (the first hard disk) in the pop-up window, and then select the target hard disk to be copied to (the second hard disk). Note that you can set the size of each partition of the target hard disk, Ghost can automatically partition and format the target hard disk according to the set partition value. Select Yes to start execution.

Ghost can copy the target hard disk almost exactly the same as the source hard disk, and implement partitioning, formatting, copying system and file in one step. Just pay attention to the target hard disk can not be too small, you must be able to load the data content of the source hard disk.

Ghost also provides a hard disk backup function, which is to save the data of the entire hard disk into a file and save it on the hard disk (menu Local→Disk→To Image), then you can restore it to other hard disk or source at any time. On the hard disk, this is convenient for installing multiple systems. The method of use is similar to partitioned backup.

System Restore

If the partition data backed up in the hard disk is damaged, it cannot be repaired by the general data repair method, and the system cannot be started after being destroyed. You can use the backup data to perform complete recovery. There is no need to reinstall the program or system. Of course, you can also restore your backup to another hard drive.

To restore the backup partition, select the menu Local→Partition→From Image in the interface, select the restored backup file in the pop-up window, select the restored hard disk and partition, and click the Yes button.
Software Features

Storage Media

Ghost supports storage media beyond our imagination, it supports peer LPT interface, peer-to-peer USB interface, peer-to-peer TCP/IP interface, SCSI tape drives, portable devices (JAZ, ZIP, MO, etc.), CD recorders (CDR, CDRW), etc. These features don't require any external drivers and software, just a floppy disk! Especially for the support of CD burners, today's recorders and blank discs are very cheap, which is very suitable for backup purposes.

Compatibility

Ghost has good support for existing operating systems, including FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS, UNIX, NOVELL and other file storage formats. Unlike the previous version, Ghost 2001 added support for Linux EX2 (FIFO file storage format), which means that Linux users can also use Ghost to back up the system.

Supporting Software Support

Ghost Browser: In the previous Ghost version, we can only perform simple backup, copy and restore of the system, and restore individual files and folders. Use the take-away GhostEXP software. Now, Symantec has integrated the Ghost browser into the software. Ghost browser uses a similar interface to the resource manager, through which we can quickly and easily find the files and folders we want in the backup package and restore.

Gdisk: Gdisk is a new utility that completely replaces FDisk and format:

* Quick format.

* The ability to hide and display partitions. This feature allows more than one primary DOS partition, and the operating system on each partition has a different version. The ability to hide partitions makes the computer accustomed to booting to the selected bootable partition, ignoring the installation of the same operating system in other hidden partitions.

* Comprehensive partition report.

* Highly secure disk erasure. Provides disk wipe options that meet US Department of Defense standards and higher security standards.

Unlike FDisk, which uses an interactive menu, GDisk is driven by the command line. This provides faster configuration of disk partitions and the ability to define GDisk operations in batch files. But at the same time, dozens of parameters will cause headaches for ordinary users, so I do not recommend general users, Symantec should also launch a corresponding GUI (Graphical User Interface) console to facilitate user access. Specific parameter descriptions can be found using the command line gdisk/?.

Live Update

Live Update is a generic upgrade of Symantec's software that checks for Symantec software installed on the current system and upgrades the software online via the Internet.

When installing Ghost 2001, the installer automatically upgrades the version of the Live Update program.
