In Windows 7, we use the family group to share files, which is convenient and fast. However, it often fails when trying to share files with other versions of Windows systems. The reasons are often mixed, for example, the workgroup name is different, the settings are incorrect, and so on. To solve the problem, we have given a set of operational procedures for reference. Let's take a look at the specific steps!

Step 1: Synchronize the workgroup

No matter what version of the Windows operating system you are using, the first step is to ensure the working groups of each computer connected to the network. The names are the same.

To view or change the computer's workgroup, computer name, etc., right-click on "Computer" and select "Properties".

If the information needs to be changed, in the "Computer Name, Domain and Workgroup Settings" column, click "Change Settings".

Click "Change".

After entering the appropriate computer name/workgroup name, press "OK".

After this step is complete, please restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Step 2: Change the settings related to Windows7

Open "Control Panel\\Network and Internet\\Network and Sharing Center\\Advanced Sharing Settings".

Enable "Network Discovery", "File and Printer Sharing", "Public Folder Sharing"; "Password Protected Sharing" section, please select "Turn off password protected sharing".

Note: The media stream is also best turned on; in addition, in the "Family Group" section, it is recommended to select "Allow Windows to manage home group connections (recommended)".

Step 3: Shared Object Settings

Now, we are moving to shared objects. The most straightforward way: Drag and drop files/folders that need to be shared directly into a public folder.

If you need to share some specific Windows 7 folders, right click on this folder and select "Properties".

Click the "Share" tab and click the "Advanced Sharing" button.

Check "Share this folder", click "Apply", "OK" to exit.

If a folder is set to share, all its subfolders will be set to share by default.

In the second step above, we have turned off password protected sharing, so now we have to make some changes to the security permissions of the shared folder. Right click on the folder you want to share and select "Properties". On the Security page, click Edit.

Next, click the "Add" button.

After typing Everyone, press "OK" to exit.

Select "Everyone" and check the appropriate permissions that will be given to Everyone in the permission selection field.

Step 4: Firewall Settings

Open "Control Panel /System and Security /Windows Firewall" Check the firewall settings to ensure that "File and Printer Sharing" is allowed.

Step 5: View shared files

Open "Control Panel" > "Network and Internet" > "View Network Computers and Devices" > "(Corresponding computer/device name )".

Small reminder: This method can really help to share files, but because of the password access function, network security will be reduced.
