Microsoft patches for Windows 8 Developer Preview

Last weekend, Microsoft released a patch for Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows 8 Server Developer Preview via Microsoft Update, which can delay the end date of both. Microsoft originally planned to terminate the Windows 8 Developer Preview on March 11, 2012. The Windows 8 Server Developer Preview will also be terminated on April 8.

After installing the patch, the Windows 8 Developer Preview and the Windows 8 Server Developer Preview are extended to January 5, 2013.

After the deadline, Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows 8 Server Developer Preview will restart every hour unless the user enters a new product activation code. It's unclear why Microsoft is doing this. After all, on February 19th, the Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be released publicly, and users can completely abandon the developer preview and install the consumer preview.
