Windows 8.1 Update 1 Getting Started

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is almost done, and the team's next work should be left with bug fixes and fine-tuning. For desktop and tablet users, Update 1 brings a lot of changes and new features, and this video is a quick overview. Windows 8.1 Update1 is now able to detect user hardware and make adjustments to the settings. If you are using a tablet, the system will render the Modern UI.

If you're using a laptop/desktop, the system can also automatically enable the "Start to Desktop" feature, as well as other fine-tuning that makes mouse operation easier.

The Modern UI application is also welcoming new features, and the Taskbar is now able to hover for quick access from the desktop. Then there is a title bar so you can minimize or close it.

In SkyDrive, this product has recently changed its new name ——OneDrive—— but there is basically no change in functionality. On the desktop side, however, the OneDrive icon returns to the taskbar, which means you have more convenient access to the contents stored in the cloud (without having to open File Manager /File Explorer and then manually jump to OneDrive).

Update 1 also brings context menus for the start screen. For non-touchers, this means they don't have to put their hands on the mouse pointer. In addition, there are two new buttons on the start screen, Power and Search. However, on touch-screen devices, the power icon is still not displayed by default.

In terms of the App List, this update allows you to easily view all applications in alphabetical order. Of course, you can also modify the number of apps that can be displayed at a time.
