Scientific cleanup Windows 98 registry

Deleting files such as redundant dlls

Friends interested in sharing software may know the famous dll file cleanup tool cleansweep. Its function is to delete a large number of useless dll files left in the system directory when we add and delete programs in the system for a long time, thereby improving the system work efficiency and reducing the loss of hard disk space. Through the registry, we can also find some useless dll file information or vxd file information and delete it, thus improving the system's operating efficiency: in the registry, open "ldkey-local-machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrentversionsharedlls", this sub-key The items included under the dll file share information written to the registry after the application is installed, the key value of each dll file indicates the number of applications sharing the dll file (the uninstaller is uninstalled when uninstalling these applications) Will give a similar "ldquo; xxx file is shared by other files, whether it is determined to delete" prompt, if a dll file corresponding to the value of 0, that means this dll file is no use for the system, we can directly delete. For other types of files, as long as their value is 0, we can judge that it is useless and should be deleted.

In addition, under this subkey, you may find that many files that were previously deleted include many files contained in the folder (which does not exist on the hard disk), and their values are not necessarily 0, but you The same can be completely removed.

Rebuild for cleanup

We know that through the registry, you can delete all kinds of uninstaller information that cannot be deleted in the "Add and Remove Programs" program. Have you ever thought about it? As you add and delete a variety of applications and hardware device drivers, it is inevitable to write data to the registry. After a long time, these discarded data will be more and more, your registry file is getting more and more bloated, not only makes your "bar", because the burden is getting heavier and slower, it will often Causes a "bar" that somehow strikes or prompts an error.

Now, let's get rid of this useless information by rebuilding the registry. First open the Registry Editor, in the Registry Editor, click the "Export" command under the “File" menu to export and name the existing registry containing various software and hardware resources. For example, it is named dc1.reg (because you want to perform the rebuild registry work under dos, it is best not to have a Chinese name).

Then restart the computer to enter the dos state (cannot use the dos mode in windows 98, windows 98 can not run when rebuilding the registry), and then execute the following command;

regedit/c dc1. Reg(c should leave a space between the file name and C)

regedit/c means to regenerate the entire registry from the file specified later. After you finish the computer and enter Windows 98, you will find that the rebuilt registry file is much smaller than the original (depending on the number of installation and uninstallation programs after Windows 98 installation). This way, "slimming" will improve the operating efficiency of Windows 98.

However, it should be noted that the version of dos must be paid attention to when rebuilding the registry in this way. Generally, the computer only installs Windows 98. If the computer has multiple operating systems installed at the same time, proceed. This operation is best done under dos 7.0, at least under dos 6.22. Windows 98 rebuild the registry takes a long time, take my own computer as an example, Celeron 300a, Abit bh6 motherboard, 64m pc100 memory, Quantum fireball 7 generation 6.4g hard drive, export the registry size is 5.86m, rebuild registration The table takes about 1 hour, so before you do this, it is best to load the disk cache program smartdrv first to speed up the processing. At the same time, you should make a full backup of the original registry before rebuilding the registry. So as not to cause unnecessary problems.

Clean up the software information in the registry

Although most Windows 98-based software now comes with an uninstaller or "Add/Remove Programs for Windows 98". The uninstall information is provided, but they do not consciously delete themselves when they exit the historical stage. Most of them do not release related information files in the registry when uninstalling (this information is mainly the software during initial installation). Write to the registry about the manufacturer, id number, user name, etc.) deleted, resulting in a growing registry, useless software information garbage more and more. We can manually delete these useless information in the registry:

In the registry, open “heky-current-usersoftware”, the primary key contained below it is generally named by the software manufacturer, such as A series of software produced by MicroSoftware is included in the “Microsoft” key entry. If you are certain that some software has been deleted, you can delete all of its key values.
