Windows XP system quickly "thin" body

Preparation before installation

2000/XP Lite software and a Windows 2000/XP installation CD.

Practical Operation

Compared to 98Lite, the installation of 2000/XP Lite can be said to be much easier, and it is completely operated under Windows. Since the operation of 2000Lite and XPLite is almost the same, the following will mainly introduce the installation of XPLite.

Step 1: Unpack the downloaded file litepc_trial.zip, there is a litepc_trial.exe program, double-click to run the license terms of XPLite, click “Accept” to continue.

As you can see, XPLite's interface is very simple, only the Start, Windows File Protection, Add/Remove Components and About sections (Figure 1).

Step 2: The first thing to do is to unlock the file protection of Windows so that you can streamline Windows. It seems that Microsoft has really worked hard to bundle its own software. Click Next in the Start section to go to the Windows File Protection section and click Turn Off to turn off Windows File Protection. A dialog box will pop up.

It requires that all known running programs be closed first and then click OK. Be sure to close all running programs first, otherwise it may cause some errors. After clicking OK, the computer restarts, double-click litepc_trial.exe to enter the program. When we come to the Windows File Protection section, we will see that the original red indicator light has turned green.

Step 3: You can start to officially cut Windows. Click Next to go to the Add/Remove Components section. We can see a lot of components listed, remove the small hook to remove this component (Figure 2).

Figure 2

The trial version of XPLite will be labeled (Pro) after some components, which means that only the official version can be deleted. The official version can delete a total of 127 components, while the trial version can only delete 46 peripheral components. After checking the box, click “Next”, in most cases the system will restart. So the streamlining is complete.

Tip: Compared to 98Lite, the installation steps of 2000/XP Lite may no longer be a problem. Even more interesting is the specific use of components that can be removed. Obviously, only knowing the purpose of the component can be safely removed. For the convenience of readers, we specially make a detailed description of the options into a table (in the download package, the “Description of Functions” file), where the bold part is the recommended reservation, and the rest of the options are also carefully read to confirm their situation. Is it suitable for deletion?

Compared with 98Lite, I personally feel that 2000/XP Lite is easier to use, but the weight loss ability is not mature enough, but from 2000/XP Lite 1.0 to 1.2, the options that can be deleted are also increasing rapidly. In the near future, LitePC will bring us even more surprises.

Summary

Through these two reductions to the system, you can see that there are several necessary conditions to minimize Windows:

1. Use the official version of the LitePC software. The demo version has very limited functionality and does not achieve the desired results.

2. You must use the English version of Windows. The double-byte processing engine and Chinese fonts are huge, and the Chinese operating system has a much smaller effect.

3. Reduce the size of the virtual memory file as much as possible. If it is only for home use, if you have enough physical memory, you can consider not using virtual memory.

4. Be careful with device drivers.

After editing: In the last issue, we introduced the use of 98Lite to streamline Windows 98, and many readers have further narrowed down Chinese Windows 98. So far, some people have reduced it to 9.8MB, and English Windows 98 has been reduced to 4.38MB (http://www.ht-c.net/newos/guest/index.htm). Of course, our goal is to get a system that works fine and doesn't have much “赘肉”, not simply pursuing a more streamlined approach. However, it can be seen from this that the bundling behavior in Windows is so serious. If Microsoft can give the installation options to all components, we will have more freedom to choose when installing the system.
