What should I do if there is a DirectX error in Win8.1?

DirectX is required for many games and multimedia applications in Windows. DirectX is built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled.

If the game, movie, or multimedia application does not play properly, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool can help you identify the problem. Here's how to open the tool.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and click "Search”.

(If using a mouse, point to the top right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down and click “search”.)

Enter “dxdiag” in the search box. Then click or click “dxdiag”.

Note

If you are using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool for the first time, you may be asked to check if the driver is digitally signed. We recommend that you click or click "yes" to help verify your identity. For more information, see How do I determine which drivers are safe to install?.

When the Diagnostic Tool is turned on, the following is checked.

The version of DirectX installed on your computer

Some older versions of apps and games require D3DX. If you see an error message similar to the following: "Because your computer does not have d3dx9_35.dll, you cannot start the program. Please try to reinstall the program to fix the problem. ” (The last two digits of the file name may vary.) Go to the DirectX End User Runtime Web Installer webpage and follow the instructions to install DirectX 9, which includes DXD3 support.

Earlier versions or unsigned drivers

DirectX compatibility tests have been performed on digitally signed drivers. Click or click the tab for the hardware that is causing the problem and look for a driver issue. You can usually solve the problem by installing the latest drivers. The latest drivers can usually be found in the support section of the manufacturer's website.

Your game controller

If the joystick or other input device is not responding, it may be incorrectly installed. Make sure the device is displayed on the "Input” tab. If it does not appear, reinstall the device according to the manufacturer's instructions. If it is a USB device, unplug it and reinsert it. If the controller is displayed in "Input", but it still does not work, try installing the latest driver from the Support section of the manufacturer's website.
