Windows 10 icon evolution (starting with Build 9926): flat and not flat

You may remember that since the first few versions of the Windows 10 preview (originally starting with Build 9926), Microsoft has slowly introduced a new set of icons that are compared to previous Windows operating system icons. Less color, lack of three-dimensionality.

TechRepublic Tech reporter Greg · Greg Shultz even sent a message expressing his disappointment, calling on Microsoft user interface designers to return to rationality when designing icons. Many other Windows Insider beta project members have expressed similar views.

The icon for Build 9926 is this:

In the Windows 10 internal preview version of Build 10130 released on May 29, the icon is far from the flat design, but It tends to the original vivid design. Of course, Microsoft did not completely return to the original design, more like it is somewhere in between.

Gabe Aul, head of the Data & Fundamentals team at Microsoft's operating system group, discussed icon design changes when Microsoft's official blog site Blogging Windows published Build 10130:

“We updated icon design To reflect our Microsoft design language, it also gives our products a more consistent and coherent interface look. These icons are more modern, lighter, and visually more closely integrated with the font. In addition, the icons for desktop and mobile apps are now more consistent, and they look the same no matter which device you use on Word and Excel.

“ User feedback has played a big role in this icon update. Everyone reflects that the icon design of the previous version is too flat and too monotonous, so we have repeatedly changed the balance between the single-line style on the mobile side and the three-bit depth on the desktop. This new set of icons is more familiar to everyone, and it is fresh and better. ”

It’s great to see the Build 10130 icon returning to its former state. However, I would also like to say that “user feedback has played a very big role in this icon update”; The sentence is also very happy.

This is not the first time Gabe Aul has provided user feedback to determine the functionality or features of Windows 10, but this time user feedback seems to be even more effective.

Gabe Aul then discussed the icon design in more detail:

“We have repeatedly designed thousands of icons between traditional glass effect icons and new application icons. We studied Swiss-style graphic design, Dutch product design and modern architectural design as well as a variety of other design fields and styles, hoping to find design inspiration. The evolution of the icon will continue, and the icons we hope to make are more consistent and more practical. & rdquo;

Gabe Aul finally said that with the release of Windows 10, the icon of the new system will have more changes.

He also attached a picture in the article, the first row of icons in the figure is the icon of Windows 8.1, the second row is the flat icon of the previous preview version of Windows 10, the last row Is the icon of Build 10130.
