Vista Add a new file or location to index method

What is an index

Use an index to quickly access specific information in a database table. An index is a structure that sorts the values of one or more columns in a database table, such as the name column of the employee table. If you want to find a specific employee by last name, the index will help you get the information faster than you have to search all the rows in the table.

As we all know, in order to ensure the efficiency of search, Windows Vista only scans the index in the default search instead of searching the file name or file attribute on the entire hard disk. In the index, it stores information about the file, including the file name. , modify dates, and attributes such as author, tag, and rating. In the default settings of Windows Vista, the indexed location includes personal folders, E-mails, and offline files, while other files such as program files, system files, etc. are not indexed because it is rarely required to search for these files, so the index These locations are not included to increase search speed.

However, in some cases, we may need a more detailed search at a non-indexed location. For this, although we can enable content search in a non-indexed location, relatively speaking, the search speed at this time is Unsatisfactory.

The simple solution is that if you often need to search for files in a certain location, then adding them to the index is a better choice. In theory, most files in Windows Vista are Can be indexed.

Adding new files or locations to the Windows Vista index

Note: Adding too many locations to the index will increase the burden on the system and, at the same time, affect search efficiency, so be careful Select the directory or file to join the index, do not make the index too large.

Find the appropriate directory in the “Change Selected Locations list. Check the box before it, if you want to include a folder but not all of its subfolders, you can expand the folder and then clear the check box next to the folder you do not want to index. The cleared folder will appear in the "Exclusions" column in the "Exclude" column, and then click "OK”.
