What should I do if the Win8.1 installer stops responding

Computer Store News: If you are upgrading to Windows 8.1 using the Upgrade Assistant or DVD, but the installer stops responding, you can review the possible causes and solutions to the problems below.

The installer may still be running in the background. It may take up to two hours to complete the installation of Windows 8.1. If you have been waiting for two hours, please restart your computer to determine if the Windows Welcome screen is displayed.

Your computer may have incompatible hardware or drivers. If you have not completed the Upgrade Assistant, please check the Windows Compatibility Center for any known hardware or driver incompatibility issues. Disconnect all unwanted external hardware connections from your computer and re-run the Windows 8.1 installer.

There may be software on your computer that prevents upgrades. If you have already installed anti-virus software, you may need to uninstall the software before you can upgrade to Windows 8.1. We recommend that you use the removal tool provided by the software manufacturer (if available). If you are using encryption software, you may need to suspend the software before you upgrade.

There may be a problem with the installation media. For best results, install directly from the Windows 8.1 installer. However, if you are creating an installation media to install Windows 8.1, we recommend that you use a USB drive instead of a DVD. If you need or want to use a DVD, choose a slower write speed when burning a DVD. The slower the write speed, the higher the chances of a successful burn process.
