The difference between the registry command regedit and regedt32

There are two registry tools in Windows, one is regedit.exe, one is regedt32.exe, what is the difference between the two?

Regedit.exe is a familiar registry tool, and Regedt32.exe does not support the import and export of registry key files (.reg).

Regedit.exe is the registration editor for the 16-bit Windows operating system. It is used to modify the Windows registry. This database is located in the Windows directory and is named Reg.dat. The database contains information about 16-bit applications that the file manager uses to open and print files. Applications that support Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) also use this database. WOW (Windows on Windows) and 16-bit Windows applications use and maintain Reg.dat. The WOW layer is located on top of the virtual DOS machine (VDM) layer.

Regedit.exe is a 16-bit application that is included with Windows NT to be compatible with earlier 16-bit applications. Regedit provides a way to check Reg.dat under Windows NT. You can migrate the Reg.dat database file to the Windows NT registry the first time you log in after the initial installation of Windows NT.

Regedt32.exe is the configuration editor for Windows NT. It is used to modify the Windows NT configuration database or the Windows NT registry. This editor allows you to view or modify the Windows NT registry. It provides a window view that represents the various parts of the registry, called hive units. Each window displays two parts: the left side is the folder that represents the registry key. On the right is the value associated with the selected registry key. Regedt32 is a powerful tool. Care must be taken when using it to modify registry values. Missing or incorrect values in the registry will cause the installed Windows NT to be unusable.
